False accusations are of particular interest to skeptics because skepticism has often been at the forefront of giving voice to the wrongly accused. From the Salem witch trials (in which innocent young women were falsely accused of being witches) to the Satanic Panic moral panic of the 1980s and 1990s (in which dozens of innocent men and women were falsely accused of sexually assaulting children and others) and hundreds of examples in between, skeptics have often been there to remind the public to ask for evidence before rushing to judgment. Indeed, the brilliant CSI Fellow Carol Tavris just recently wrote an e-skeptic piece about this in relation to recent accusations against Woody Allen.

Just so it’s clear, men were actually victimized just as much, if not possibly more, during the witch trials. I can’t read the article while I’m at work, but the phrasing of that paragraph makes it sound like they’re saying that was a specific female problem. Many, many men were put on trial as witches during that time.

Oh noes, my Burning Time-erinos!

That only women were accused of witchcraft has been instilled into folk history by feminist propaganda. In reality the glaring gender imbalance was in the accusers. At Salem the primary complainants (known as the "afflicted girls") were

These afflicted girls were: Elizabeth Booth, Sarah Churchill, Elizabeth Hubbard, Mercy Lewis, Ann Putnam Jr, Betty Parris, Susannah Sheldon, Mary Walcott, Mary Warren and Abigail Williams.

100% female.

Even in Salem, five of the nineteen accused and executed during the Trials were men - six if you include Giles Corey.

If you exclude the children in the Satanic Panic, I am going to take a guess and say the adults were most than likely all female. And I am also betting that the "experts" and "social workers" were mainly female.

It is unwise to bet on a past event because the uncertainty exists only in your own mind. How do you know your counter-party is not better informed?

In the McMartin preschool case the initial accuser was mother Judy Johnson, and the people who validated the accusations were social worker Kathleen MacFarlane and pediatrician Astrid Heger.

But that’s what feminism does, take issues that affect both males and females and make it all about women.

Because it’s all about power, that’s what feminists care about most is power. As much as they say “smash the patriarchy” they also have no problem using the system to their advantage and dismissing it when it doesn’t suit them.

The often made feminist complaint about women being treated as a helpless damsel who needs a man protection is a trope they have no problem playing into when it benefits them. They do so with the expectation of male compliance and protection, that they’ll get access to male power for their use.

Who do they go to with their accusations? Men mostly men in positions of power, so as much as they resent him they also know to use it to their advantage.

It’s more of a passive aggressive way to access male power and aggression without having to take any of the risks of the male or suffer the consequences.

I can remember in high school back in 1999/2000 when my brother started driving suddenly he was getting a lot of female attention. Being 16 and driving a 1995 Ford Escort wasn’t a bad thing.

But despite him being a bit naive to their intentions one girl after being rejected decided to go to the school police officer and claim that he swerved the car towards her in the parking lot as if he was going hit her.

There’s several problems with that scenario 1) weaponizing the system to their advantage. 2) playing damsel in distress in order to access male authority 3) false accusations, when asked if she wanted to press charges she declined, but was bothered enough to go to the police. 4) brought a “witness” to verify her accusations

So it’s really all about allowing women to game the system to suit their wants.

I always thought it was funny the stat I saw going around that 95% of accusations are true. Now I have no idea the validity of that statement, but I always thought it was weird the confidence people had in the data around these accusations. Doesn't the idea of a fake accusations sorta obfuscate accurate data collection? For all we know, maybe it's not that most accusations are true but rather that fake accusations are really hard to uncover.

This little video does a pretty good show at explaining how those ridiculously low numbers are manufactured.

I like the article and the story but I wish it was a more recent case.

I'm not saying that it does not happen nowadays but this article is not recent enough to criticize the witch-hunt that a post me too world has become in social spaces.

It gaves an opening for the "that's so uncommon that you have to go back to the 2014 to find a case"

But it was a good reading noneless

This contains some well-told anecdotes and is a good writeup on the need for a deliberate truth-seeking approach to accusations of crime. Here is an old post I made with links to exploratory studies on the topic focusing more on the actual breakdown of false sexual assault accusations in data (DV accusations are slightly different, and more common).
