The article doesn’t mention his age at the time so it’s not clear if it may have been statutory rape or not.

I can give some credence to the “under his spell” argument if the person is a minor but we are seeing this argument used successfully on college campuses. Woman consents but later claims she didn’t feel she was able to say no, and this argument is all too often accepted and men found guilty when everyone involved agrees consent was given.

We rightly have laws protecting minors because we acknowledge their consent and decisions are not mature decisions and we expect mature adults to realize this. So, again if their ages qualify as statutory rape, he deserves to be found guilty. My concern is this argument being used successfully by adults.

7 years of difference between them. What's the law in the US? An 18 year old can't have sex with a 17 year old? Is there an exemption to age of consent when both are close in age? What's the maximum gap?

In my country that would've been legal. A bit weird but legal. The age of consent is 16 but there's a 7 year gap where consent is still valid.
