It's just the single best form of self meditation and self education there is.

I'm of course talking about books. Anytime someone is depressed or frustrated and comes here to ask for help, it should always be recommended as one of the best forms of self improvement.

If you are reading crap about how john and jessica were soulmates and lived the rest of their lives together happy until they died together holding hands at 95 then no it's not...If you get a decent book about self improvement or learning valuable things about society, philosophy, history or even some good well known literature books then it it is productive and you will learn many things!!

Absolutely. Even reading fiction, or other text that doesn't directly contribute to learning something new will help you improve your vocabulary, your grammar, and make you sound smarter overall.

If reading is knowledge, and knowledge is power...

Depends if you put what you've learned into practice or not.

Its pointless having information/facts and so on if you never use them. But obviously if you read enough you will inevitably use some of what you've read. But my point is you don't just read and hope for the best, you do it with a purpose, thats when its most productive.

Reading good literature is the best way to build empathy.

What do you think?

[–]hhex -3 points-2 points-1 points 9 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Non-fiction, yes. Fiction not so much.

[–]bidric 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I think it depends on the kind of fiction you're reading. There's some pretty interesting and insightful literature out there.

[–]MOCKxTHExCROSS 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Disagree. Good non fiction helps you understand the past, good fiction the future.
