I worked for an estate jeweler some years ago and we would see customers with this request frequently.

The value of the minimal amount of scrap gold that is used in a ring does not amount to the labor cost of casting an entire new ring out of it, and your boyfriend would save little, if any, money this way.

A better idea would be to trade in the scrap gold toward a new ring. He gets the value of the gold and you get your own new ring.

UPDATE: we spoke about it today. I wouldn't go into a fight, so I didn't bring everythings on the table.

The first point he mentioned was "he didn't wanted to waste the gold and he will not have use of it". I said that he could offer it to his sisters so the "family gold" would stay in his family.

He agreed and surprisedly admitted he wanted to spare money on the ring for the next one (alliance). Thanks to your returns, I said that it will cost too much to redo a ring and that he will practicly not spare money and that for the same price, I would prefer a ring on my own.

He agreed ! He said that I deserved something for myself, something to have a new start as a family. That was an idea he had because of the gold he received and wanted to "share it with me" and not "waste it".

I hope I am not blindfolded, but this conversation was a relief. He agreed on my point of view and was not close minded about giving it to his Sister. Also, I really think that he was not having a clue what to do with this gold since he doesnt want to sell it.

As an antique, the ring will probably be of a higher value than if melted down and used in a contemporary design. What era is it from and what carat is the gold? Melting it down means you reduce the gold itself to its scrap value, but in its current design it has additional value by virtue of being antique.

Personally I think you should get both the antique ring and a new contemporary one for everyday wear.

He’s trying to cut costs on the ring and telling you about it? SMH. Your intuition is right here. The man can’t even be generous when it comes to buying you a ring that’s yours. You want a man that’s generous because he loves you, not because the gold is there and it “saves him money to buy a bigger diamond.” He should have not said anything or just lovingly put money into the bigger diamond anyway.

Idk it feels awkward and tight fisted to me. No need to skimp on the ring he wants you to wear for the rest of your life. It’s not even your family heirloom, it’s his - and his way of being cheap. Don’t marry a cheap man.

Just my immediate thoughts, but I am pretty much unsatisfied with all men who aren’t openly generous to their partners. You want this man to provide for you, and this is a step that shows he can provide. Can he? Whatever your feeling about this, don’t ignore it.
