Dude, WTF? Honestly, it doesn't appear you're taking this seriously at all. You wait until the DAY BEFORE to ask for help? And, by the way, you don't go to court to “discuss” anything with the judge. It's not like you'll sit down at the dining room table with coffee and go over your ideas. I'm sure you know this, but your use of the word “discuss” really makes think you're quite unprepared. Court hearings are NOT discussions.

Ask the court clerk for continuance, and specifically state that you need more time to find a lawyer. In my experience, these requests are usually granted because no judge wants to have a lost litigant in their courtroom, unaware of the process, unprepared, and unable to proceed.

Do not miss court at all period. Be early period. If you can’t afford an attorney by then say that to the judge in the hearing. Ask them nicely if they will allow more time to retain counsel.

You’ve met a lawyer but have you asked them any questions? Talked to other lawyers in the same area of law? Asked other lawyers similar questions.

I interviewed lawyers until I found one I felt capable of getting me what was most important to me…time with my kids.

I would go, just don't commit to anything. You can always blow it up until the very last day, a page out of their playbook. As to whether you MUST go - it depends on what the court order says - if it says something like "the parties must appear in person or through counsel" and you don't go - that's contempt. And some courts have a standing order that parties must be present - so really better to show up. If you don't feel comfortable, just say "Your honor, I'm sorry but I would like to continue the case to a future date as I'm not ready to proceed today." If pressed, say you're looking into hiring a lawyer.

But of course, better to hire a lawyer due to the information/experience asymmetry with your wife.
