Totally agree.
It's the paradox of manhood: A real man doesn't let anyone tell him how to be a real man.
What it comes down to is you can't teach a boy how to become a man. Because if he acts as he was told, he automatically disqualifies himself as a man. It's probably more about having the right mindset rather than just emulating a set of behaviors we tend associate with masculinity.
As such, the boy must teach himself. The student must become his own teacher.

So I can't tell you or anyone else here what it takes to become a 'real' man. What I can tell you is what I believe I need to be at the very least in order to consider myself as a man:

- I and I alone am responsible for deciding the direction of my life. I must do so by taking control of that what actually is within my control and relinquish everything else that isn't.
- Failure allows growth. Incompetence invites weakness. What ever direction I do decide to take in life, I can afford failure but I cannot afford incompetence in order to achieve my goals.

These two basic principles are there to protect my independence and agency from those who would want to manipulate me against my own self interest. It allows me to use my most powerful tool: the ability to say no.

This topic is actually an interesting convergence where mens rights and feminism of various strands see eye to eye mostly, but there is some conflict. While the feminist school of thought says, men shouldn't be trapped by this, they underhandedly still require men to find a role in which to be useful (of gain to society etc.)

I don't agree. I think the primary is men's freedom(which doesn't impede the freedom of others). If a dude chooses to live the minimalist lifestyle to the fullest, contributing the least as possible to society and community, then... his damn choice! Gender studies, feminism and whatever should leave this guy the hell alone.

If we're really for men's freedom here, we also accept men's right to drop masculinity expectations and replace with absolutely nothing!

The “real men”or the “Nice Guy” concept used often times by feminists are examples of the NoScotsman fallacy. As simple as that.

Example:

*Feminist claims women are nowhere near as superficial as men when picking a date and selecting a mate. Claims that being nice and having a good heart is what they care about.

Man* pulls a statistic proving women are pickier when swiping right on Tinder and that a male’s height is a factor. Meaning that women can overlook nice guys and that nice guys don’t necessarily have it easy.

*feminists reacts with personal attacks such as “here comes the incel” or “bet you call yourself a nice guy”… or my favorite which is the NoScotsman :

How they came to that conclusion? we will never know. They seem to be fixed on the idea that a real niceguy would never antagonize them or challenge one of their view points. How precious.

When it comes to the “You are not a real man because a real man would[…]“ thing, I would say this is a typical pseudo feminist argument. I am referring to feminists that are unassumingly sitting on the fence when it comes to ideologies. They are both conservative and progressive when it suits them regardless of the contradictions that come with that duality. I have a hard time imagining a true liberal feminist employing terms that hurt men by weaponizing a construct that she legitimately believes hurts both genders and needs to go!

A man is an adult human male (XY chromosomes) by definition, end of story. A woman is an adult human female (XX chromosomes) by definition, end of story. Everyone else is intersex.

The concept of gender confuses everything because it attempts to assign specific behaviours to people based on the assumption that those behaviours are only aligned with the discrete binary sexes. Whilst some behaviours are statistically exhibited more often by a single sex, they are diverse and not exclusive in reality. Society would do better to embrace the concept of diversity and not gender and allow people to be who they are instead of expecting their characteristics or behaviours to align with their chromosomes.

I suggest that society stop using gendered language and attempting to fit people into categories: it's pointless when there are an infinite number of gender categories that could be created.

There is nothing shameful about being diverse (including intersex): it's how we were created.

Transgendered people are the epitome of diversity, having characteristics and behaviour different from their chromosomes.

Consequently, with the amount of real diversity within society, it's also pointless to talk about "real men" or "real women" or to structure civilisation around those concepts.

However, society will have need of people fulfilling certain roles and those roles may require certain abilities, but it is those abilities that should be advertised, not the sex or gender of the person. Even in something like procreation, it is abilities rather than simply sex that is important: for example same sex couples having children need to have the ability to expose that child to diverse role models apart from themselves, for balance.

Bringing different sexes together does present certain challenges within society due to the ever present primitive mating behaviour interfering with other tasks and the statistically significant differences between the sexes creating tension and conflict: nature has to love-drug men and women to get them to work together as a team to achieve successful procreation for example and society needs to use measures to achieve the same end result. The simplest example is the conflict around ablution facilities and how traditionally men and women have been kept separate, except now with increased diversity and the pointless concept of gender, the conflicts are returning. The solution is to convert the facilities into multiple individual person, multi-functional units where the sexes are still kept segregated but the facilities more efficiently utilised. A similar concept could apply in the workforce by leveraging greater work from home, which would physically segregate the sexes.

Embracing diversity also means embracing equality as roles are performed by the people with those abilities rather than necessarily by sex or gender, even though ultimately it may turn out that more people of a certain sex have that ability compared to another. It is also important that the abilities required for a particular role not be dumbed down simply to be more attainable to one sex or another.

In answer to the OP, I think the problem has been traditionally forcing people into certain roles based on assumed attributes instead of allowing people to apply, based on ability, and being rewarded for that contribution.

Traditionally I think sex has always been a reward for men utilised in war, either as rape of the women of the defeated side, facilitated by their status, or provided in the form of prostitution. I think this demonstrated how important sex is to men, but which women have failed to appreciate because they can't see past its unfortunate impact on them. Nowadays, men are not rewarded with sex for volunteering their ability, but expected to sacrifice themselves through their ability without reward and effectively treated as slaves.

I think it is time that society changed the old ways from reward/punishment/enslavement to provide for society, to win-win solutions in that provision. It's hard for human beings to transition away from simply using things of benefit to them without giving something back.
