Why are so many women obsessed with True crimes and Serial killers?

Those shows reenforce the many stereotypes about men as being sadistically violent. It confirms women's ideas about men. But it's not real. Sort of like porn. In fact South Park called it murder porn and put child protection apps on the TV so their parents couldn't watch.

From an evolutionary psychology standpoint there are two factors at play here. First is proximity to danger; I.e the woman wants to experience danger but in an environment where the consequences of that proximity is voided (if you want proof, check pornhub stats for which gender consumes the most aggressive porn). Which ties in to the second point; there could be an evolutionary advantage in orbiting a man capable of killing, since it would technically reduce the risk of you being victimized (Unless the killer specifically targets people in his proximity).

I am a woman and I have wondered the same myself. I am not obsessed with true crime stuff but once I had a weird fixation in one true crime event, the Shanann Watts one, and I can't explain why that was but it did last a few months. Mind, while women are often the victims, a non insignificant number of women take the side of the male murderer and again that's something I do not understand. I suspect it is the same psychological mechanism behind women who go after serial killers and the like, and why so many women have this thing for vampires.

Even if I cannot explain it myself, I guarantee you it has little to nothing to do with all women being psychos or gold diggers, as some people have suggested here. If you guys don't want to be labelled as women-hating red-pilling incels (as you often are), you shouldn't say stuff like this...

Because they are more afraid of this kind of thing, and when you are afraid of something, sometimes you will cope with that by consuming lots of information about it so you will feel prepared for it if it happens to you. This is an evolutionary strategy that is related to doom scrolling.

True Crime is trashy in that you don't need to pay close attention to it and can switch off, but is mildly informative and entertaining along a number of vectors. (Psychology, criminology, history, and so on for informative. Horror, crime, police proceedural for entertainment). I find most of the women who indulge in it do so along the vein of popcorn munching and not paying much attention to it.

It's quite a condensed form of media to consume that combines multiple genres. This might also help people to watch it continuously provided they don't pay much attention because you can vaguely pay attention to a different aspect of it. Instead of 3 hours of vague horror you can shift your gaze and get 1 hour of vague horror, 1 hour of vague crime, 1 hour of vague police procedural. This makes it good to just throw on if you don't want to be picky.

I think when men are looking for trash entertainment they're more inclined towards other forms of media, and when they're interested in educational entertainment they'll go for something more straightforwardly documentary like. I think men when looking for trash entertainment to zone out to, they aren't as likely to have trash educational entertainment.

I'm not sure which approach you can honesty say is better. When men want to consume trash entertainment they want to be entertained. Women apparently want to vaguely soak in some questionable facts about various things they might not remember all that accurately because it was playing in the background alongside being entertained.

It could be down to the compartmentalization of thinking both genders tend to engage in. Women may be more inclined towards infotainment while men are more inclined towards entertainment and information being more distinctly separated in their consumption habits.

They’re selective on who they care about and have a problem with. You don’t see them obsessing over how awful criminals like Wuornos, Ghislaine Maxwell, or the I-45 killer are. I know the I-45 killer hasn’t been ID’d, but evidence gathered from the Jane Doe in Huntsville TX indicates that a woman was the perp.

As to why they have no problem with these fuckers? Guess

I think it is the sense of danger but without the actual danger. Kinda like riding a rollercoaster, you have the feeling of danger cause you "fall" but you know you won't. You are still in control and are not at risk of losing your life.

Because its scary knowing that those sociopaths exist and exposure to things makes you less stressed about that fear. I spend a lot of time alone at work and home- exposure and insight to my most extreme fears helps them keep from stressing myself our everytime the fridge makes a noise. Knowing how they chose their victims and how they got to them also.helps me remember to lock my garage door .
