Yes, there are people that do an online divorce or just d/load the paperwork and do it themselves. There are 3 parts (varies a little state to state):

1) Division of assets & debts. Most states are no fault and community property. This means ALL martial assets/debts are split 50/50. BUT that's net. So say you have a 401k with $50k in it and stocks worth $80k. You could keep your 401k + $15k and she would keep $65 of stock. That's a 50/50 split.

2) Spousal support / alimony: Varies from state to state. Look up rules in your are or discuss with each other.

3) Child support: you have custody, residency and support. You guys say 50/50 on custody. BUT where does the child live? Some new popular splits are 5225 (5 nights parent A, 2 nights parent B, 2 nights parent A, 5 nights parent B) and 7/7 (one week w/ parent A then 1wk w/ Parent B). The idea is both parents get 50% of the time with the child and alternating weekends. BUT you have to live close enough not to mess with school. As for support, you can work it out yourselves or check with your state, some have online calculators. Remember you can negotiate assets/debt and spousal support, but NOT child support (since it's for the child) below state min requirements. BUT if you guys are truly amicable might be able to just skip formal support and take care of your kid. Also note, either parent can file for child support AFTER the divorce at anytime as well.

So you have three choices: 1) Hire a mediator / mediation service. They will help guide you through everything, write it all up, get the correct forms, and then have an attorney review it all. You submit everything and a judge signs off. 2) Do an online service, fill out everything yourselfs. Hire an attorney to review it (a few hours) to make sure everything is good. Then file. 3) Just google and d/load all the files yourself. File it all out and file. Would still recommend an attorney review just to make sure no gotcha or the court won't reject.

There have been people that got divorced for like $1000! I wanted to do mediation (full service that we found was a flat $15k up front). BUT the STBX lawyered up and we are over $60k in the hole so far :) For no reason...

Easiest way is not to get married.

Beyond that unless there are no kids or assets to split it going to be ugly.

Hire an attorney. In some cases where there are very few assets and no children you can both file jointly representing pro se, but generally not recommended
