I have a new relationship (Yay!) Been in a relationship 2-3 months now. We have a lot in common. We talk every single day, usually for 1-2 hours, longer on weekends. I think I am starting to have a pretty good sense of who he is, and we both have very very similar values. He would like me to be a homemaker and not a working mom.
He is 24M and Indian, and Muslim. He doesn't attend mosque every week, and isn't the strictest Muslim I know, but he does observe Ramadan and he doesn't drink. I think this is good. I am a Christian and 29F. I have found our religions are actually very similar but there are some differences.
The problem:
The biggest problem I think is the distance. I currently live in China. China has a zero covid policy and I have a work visa here. My current contract runs out in August 2023. China is one of a very very few countries that still have quarantine and still restrict international travel. They currently offer no tourist visas and only offer family visit visas to immediate family or spouses, not fiances.
What do you think is the root of the issue?
We want to meet at least for one short visit to see how we interact in person before moving in together. As far as I know, India has no quarantine. To travel internationally out of China, you need a valid residence permit, the Chinese covid vaccine plus booster shots (Not Pfizer or AstraZeneca or J&J,) PCR tests 14 days, 7 days, 48 hours and 24 hours before you leave and before you come back as well as on arrival, as well as PCR tests at every transit airport if you aren't flying direct, even if the other country doesn't require it. They also require seven days in hotel quarantine plus three days home quarantine when you arrive back in China. Flights to his city also need to be booked three months in advance if coming from China.
I'm not sure my school would let me go, they only just gave us permission to travel within China. My contract also has very strict conditions for breaking it, and it doesn't run out until August 2023. I don't want to do a midnight run, as I would get a bad reference from my school.
My dog is also another problem. Moving my dog to my home country would take over a year of planning. Moving my dog to India would be cheaper and easier, but it would also be a risk if things didn't work out.
How have you contributed to the problem?
I haven't exactly been the easiest person to deal with when talking about this. Like a whole lot of expats in China, I find the zero covid policy very stressful and frustrating and I have pushed back and found myself raising my voice during discussions about this quite a lot.
How have you attempted to mitigate the problem?
Talking about possible solutions and workarounds. Boyfriend thinks a lot of people on here will think it's a crazy idea to move in sight unseen so to speak. I agree, but unless my boss and the government by extension say yes to an overseas trip, then I'm not sure about an alternative because covid is a rather unique situation.
Current status and length of relationship? About 3 months, give or take. Boyfriend and girlfriend. It is short, but we do want to make it work.
Has anyone else been in a long distance relationship and made it into an in person one later? Any advice?
