I've worked at a couple of startups. Usually, the high paying R&D jobs are mostly done by men, and the administrative tasks are done by women. Obviously, if you then look at medians and averages, the men get paid more.

Another factor is that within a small startup, it's very clear to see which employee is bringing in more results, and they have the flexibility to reward them with a pay raise or bonuses. That means that even when you adjust for the same job/experience, you'll see differences.

There was a news article here in Australia today lamenting that women earn less on average than men.

The same article included a graph showing that men on average work 40 hours a week from 25 to 55 while women work about 30.

I mean... for fucks sake...

Exactly. It’s just so, so disingenuous. And because we live in a world of headlines, we absorb the ‘pay gap’ myth via osmosis.

Women can feel free to create startups with their buddies and fill the good paying positions. And pay the receptionist the same as the CFO since they think they deserve it. Obviously.

“Startups currently are not rewarded for building equitable workplaces, only for having a viable product for investors to invest in.”

Uh-huh.

If you see the weasel word ‘equity’, it basically means ‘tilting the decks in favour of the groups of people we care about’

Of course, everyone knows having a vagina helps one make better decisions and write better code. /s

"While a company-wide pay gap doesn’t necessarily mean an organisation pays women less than men for the same job, which is illegal, it does point to a lack of women in higher paying roles — and a lack of action from startup leaders on promoting women workers."

So they clarified that women don't get paid less for the same ammount of work but still act like this is an issue.

There are too many factors for you to infer sexism just because women aren't in managerial positions.

Also why is a women's rights topic being posted here? I think we're all in favor of women rising in the work world based on merit. And we don't automatically assume a PERSON is a worse or better candidate based on what's in their pants.

Edit: There's no need for us to circle jerk on how much we dislike radical feminism unless we're observing an actual injustice.

Because you read the article. Most won’t. It’s a classic misrepresentation. I’m seeing it a lot. The headline implies one thing, and actually (as you’ve rightly observed) the reality is very different. We’ve seen this disingenuous talk a lot on the ‘pay gap’.

I’m not sure I’m encouraging a ‘circle jerk’ as much as I am pointing out that, once again, we are swimming against a tide of misinformation.

[–]grump63 5 points6 points7 points 3 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Fair, I knee-jerk to being critical even here because I want to hold our movement to a high standard.

[–]IanHawkess[S] 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Of course. I also don’t want to just be told I’m right, and that people agree. I agree there’s a lot of lazy misogyny floating around as well, so it’s all fair.

[–]63daddy 1 point2 points3 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

That’s my take as well. They sure start off insinuating discrimination, even saying there’s a problem, though they never actually claim discrimination.

Well what these idiots don’t realize is that, when you are starting a business, you want workers who will work more for slightly higher wages. Nobody cares about gender or race when you get more bang for your buck with most male workers.

‘More’ = ‘every hour that God sends’. Women as a group just don’t do this. Why would you? You don’t really need this status to attract a mate in the same way we (men) do. We’ll (as a group) ‘marry the secretary’.

Maybe if women dropped hypergamy as a mating strategy men would also change, and ease up on gaining status etc. But given that nobody in 2022 is allowed to question any of the implications of female behaviour, I guess nothing will happen.

wait 6/7 c-roles are held by men (who often work 40 hours + up to 20 hours unpaid and paid overtime) while most women only want to work between 25-35 hours

I guess I would prefer a man over a woman who works twice as much for only 30%-50% more pay
