Reminds me of a random AITA post where the OP was eating with her boyfriend's family, and after the meal, the men went into the living room and the women retreated to the kitchen to gossip and clean. She started calling people out and genuinely thought she was some kind of savior to the other women...who were of course just humiliated. As the top comment in TwoX says (to the user's credit):

When I was growing up, my mom, grandma, three sisters and I did all the cooking, and we enjoyed it, cause it was fun and communal, and we didn’t have the men underfoot, and also didn’t cater their drinks and appetizers, cause fuck all that, this was OUR holiday.

Fortunately, in the AITA post, pretty much nobody was on OP's side. Whatever arrangement that family had, it worked for them and there were no signs of abuse, but some people have to ride in on their white horse and save others from themselves.

Obviously, if a woman doesn't want to do any cooking/cleaning for Thanksgiving, she should feel perfectly free to make that decision. But I get the feeling that a lot of the time, when people call out family dynamics like this, they assume some sort of invisible patriarchal duress, when it's just people doing what works for them.

It's always funny how they hate on previous generation where guys had certain responsibilities and women had other responsibilities.. you look at how crabby this generation is always complaining and how much happier in average the previous gens were.

Also if you look at a lot of the responses plenty that share responsibility and some where even the tables were turned.

I definitely don't feel like mine is a perfect model of sexism tbh. My dad always cooks because he's the better cook in the house hold. His turkeys are never dry and them side dishes like his green bean casserole be bussin🤤. My stepmom can't cook for the life of herself. Never says anything to her about it. Even though he's gone working out of town a lot. I dunno maybe I have a one off family. But even with my other extended family the guests bring a lot of the sides while the host cooks the main dish. For me it's always been a celebration of each other's best dishes and a reason to spend time together.

I learned how to cook from my mom and dad. My dad is a red seal chef, it's probably coming out better if I do it anyway.

I find this kind of funny because in my family most of the cooking was done by my dad and when my mom left him I was the one who did the majority of the cooking and my older brother works as a cheif.

In my experience especially in modern day the vast majority of people I know who can cook and take care of domestic chores are men.

In modern times it feels like if you want to be a successful man you need to play both the masculine and femine role while your wife those whatever she wants.

If stuff like this made women oppressed in the passed men of today and tge men of tge future are definitely oppressed now.

The men in my family never wants to help out with the cleaning after holiday meals. That’s why I decided to marry a man who helps me with the cooking and cleaning, instead of complaining about a sexist culture. Do they not realize that their mothers were the ones who chose these men?
