Child support reform idea?

Barring major issues with one of the parents, there should be mandatory shared custody and both parents should contribute to a fund that's used to cover the kid's expenses. Receipts for the children's expenses should be mandatory as well. The cost to cover each child should not be based upon one parent's income, but rather a flat rate that's calculated based on the child's needs, such as being handicapped. If it's a child with no disabilities, then there should be a flat rate applied to both parents. My point is, no parent should get custody by default and no parent should be forced to pay the lions share of the expenses. Most often, the higher earning spouse, especially if it's a male, is financially raped by the X in our misandric, gynocentric, unjust, biased legal system.

I second Sammie’s point that child support generally is and should be individualized, but I definitely agree with your underlying principle: Divorce typically means there is less money to go around, yet fathers are often expected to pay more towards raising their child not less and that’s simply not fair. Some kind of reform is needed.

Hey! I have a couple reservations:

1 - it costs roughly $280k to raise a child using 2022 numbers, but it will cost more and more each year. Therefore, that ~$42 will have to change as time goes on.

2 - I think your plan is forgetting that child support is supposed to be individualized. Children aren’t the same and they have different needs. First and foremost, costs vary based on age. As a child ages, they get into more programs and activities. It costs more to feed an older child than a younger child, too. I don’t know the numbers, but I doubt it costs the same to support a 5 year old as it does to support a 15 year old. Also, if a child has a disorder that needs additional services, then it will cost more than $42 a day. Further, children may be accustomed to a certain lifestyle which costs more. For example, if a child is in private school then it again will likely costs more than $42 a day.

Edit: just to add, I agree child support is used vindictively far too often. That said, we can’t forget that we should do what’s best for the kids.

The numbers for the costs to raise a child are heavily exaggerated because they are not based on marginal cost increase. If a household has two parents and one child, they assume the cost is 1/3 of the entire household expense. For many expenses that is not accurate. Consider rent - as the number of occupants goes up, the total rent does go up, but the rent/occupant goes down. Therefore, a much more accurate way would be to subtract household expenses of a married couple from household expenses of a married couple with one child to determine the cost of raising a child. Measured that way, the costs are a lot less than those figures.

If one reads the historical jurisprudence on marriage and divorce, one finds that marriage was invented to ensure men's disposable income fell into the hands of women and the state. Divorce was purpose designed to be especially punishing to men. The male-only draft was created to ensure men could be legally conscripted, sans choice or bodily autonomy for men, to be used as the human shields and human sacrifices of women and women's powerful, wealthy, male state violence proxy. Both Biden and Trump received multiple deferments to stay out of Vietnam, as did their wealthy friends.

50/50 custody and pay is the best for the child. And the mother automatically getting the child is ridiculous. If it was about the child being where it has a better life and the father is the one who can provide a better life the child should be living with the father and not be out somewhere he/she can't be taking care of and someone else has to give money so the child can survive, that has never made sense.

I do like the idea one state had about some kind of debit card (not sure where i read about it). You cant spend the money on anything that's not for the kid aparantly and it's about time someone started regulating where this money is going and making sure it goed to the child. Would be nice if they started asking a realistic amount of money now also.
