I suspect that this entire dating in fancy restaurants concept is a marketing ploy by the catering trade, just like DeBeers' vastly overpriced shiny bauble scam.

There are many other venues -- what about the local zoo for example? Or visit a museum, a gallery or a fair instead.

You get to talk to each other just as well if not better, if you take a long walk together, in fact, this used to be the dating method of choice not so long ago.

It's pretty common for women to do this. It isn't limited to free meals. Most women will go along with any guy who gives her any kind of free shit she finds appealing so long as she doesn't have to do too much for it. Then when a better deal comes along or the free shit dries up, or her part comes due... she's out. I would even posit that that is the standard mode for dating in the US, Canada, UK, and Australia.

Meh. I've been on a few dozen first dates this year - I'm picky. I don't see the problem with this behavior.
