In one state or country, a person doing this or similar is a sexual predator, in another, a teenager lovebird. Something's just not right.

I understand the double-standard inherent in this, but my issue is this:

Why should we be prosecuting two people for consensual sex? Why do we assume that anyone who has sex with anyone below a certain age threshold is necessarily raping them? Why does it suddenly become AOK to cheat, lie, and swindle your way into bed with someone once they hit eighteen? If it's wrong to con a fifteen year-old with no knowledge of sex into bed, why not an eighteen year-old with no knowledge of sex?

Statutory laws seem so misguided to me.

Yes there's a gender double standard in these cases, but she was barely of age herself. There's a difference between 'child molester' and 'stupid teenagers who think they're in love'.

underage, there are a lot of ages that are under age, but assuming they mean a teenage girl, no one should ever have to be socially or legally pressured into regretting sex with an "underage" girl. When buying perishable goods you want the item with the furthest expiration date possible, while obviously still being usable. and make no mistake, a womb is a perishable commodity. That aside, some of the sweetest, kindest, most truly loveable women, in an emotional way, I have ever met were 15-16 year old girls.

I don't think she should be punished. My boyfriend is 21 and I am 17. We both know what we're doing even if I am not 18 yet. I think a 4 year age difference isn't that bad, whether 21 and 17 or 18 and 14. I am pretty sure 14 year olds know what they're consenting too. 100%.

In Florida there is something called the 'Rome and Juliet Clause' for situations like these, where someone over the age of consent sleeps with someone under that age of consent, but not by much. If Turn 18 and sleep with my 17 year old girlfriend that should not be statuatory rape.

The issue was that the law only applied to straight couples.

An underage person can't provide informed consent, regardless of the gender. Ergo, it's rape.
