Women in that religion are not allowed to initiate divorces, and thus have fewer rights than men. People whose rights are inhibited tend to react to it, unsurprisingly.

This is not something that happens as a part of mainstream western culture. Orthodox Jewish marriages can ONLY be ended by the husband, and rabbis getting all gangster on husbands who won't sign a "ghet", releasing their wife from marriage, is a pretty long standing tradition in their culture. It's worth noting here that, from what I understand, which is admittedly not much, the rabbis only choose to implement this when the wife is being abused and the husband is seen as "abusing" the power afforded him by Jewish culture to keep his wife in the marriage. The whole idea behind a "ghet" in the first place is that women are, for the most part, prone to leaving marriages for little or no cause, therefore placing the power of divorce solely in the man's hands lends stability to the institution. The gangster rabbi's are a balance in the system, used to help women who are in genuine need of a divorce.

I'd be very curious to see how this undercover wife portrayed her situation. If these rabbis are resorting to these methods to force ANY Jewish guy to divorce, that's incredibly fucked. However; if these rabbis are sticking to tradition and using their gangster methods only in what they see as valid cases of abuse, neglect, etc that's a different story. So it call comes down to how this undercover presented her situation: did she present as some westernized, "empowered" feminist who wanted out for the typical entitled, solipsistic western reasons or was she presenting herself as a battered woman with the kind of bruises only a battered woman has?
