Tom Martin is the guy who thinks that Saudi Arabia, a country where women's rights are seriously curtailed, is a 'whoriarchy', a state run by "lazy whores pulling all strings" from behind the scenes.

Yeah, I can't imagine why people hate him.

Here's why Tom Martin is wrong about 'whores'.

All human interaction has transactional elements. You know how you sometimes have a 'friend' who's never there for you when you need them, but at the first sign of trouble they're on the blower expecting you to bend over backwards, interrupt what you're doing, and deal with their crisis? Well, at some point you realise that person isn't really your friend but is using you. Reciprocity is part and parcel of friendship, and you expect something back from your friend. It's transactional to some extent. There's a lot of wiggle-room, but ultimately you can't just go on endlessly giving nothing back. It doesn't work like that.

Now, you could actually formalise this sort of relationship. A person can pay someone to be their 'friend'-who-isn't-really-a-friend. We call such people counsellors. What we don't do here is confuse the two - a friend is someone where there's a lot of wiggle room but ultimately with some transactional reciprocity in the background. A counsellor is someone where the transactionality is made explicit. You're paying the counsellor for a service. It's because we formalise it that we use a different conceptual category. It's possible for people to be friends with elements of a counselling dynamic, provided there's still some reciprocity involved. A typical combination is an unstable, fun person being friends with a stable, boring person. They help each other in pretty different ways, but it's still friendship.

It's extremely similar with sexual relationships. Of course there's an element of 'you scratch my back; I'll scratch yours' involved. If you really really want regular sex, but your partner doesn't as much, there's a good chance there'll be some reciprocity involved in that they get to do things you don't particularly want to do, such as talk about how Anna at work is being such a bitch, and about how TOWIE is really a postmodernist masterpiece. That's life. There's always some transactional stuff going on.

Push it too far in one direction, however, and that's where you're getting to the point where you don't really have a relationship at all. If you're doing everything she wants and not getting much back, or you're getting everything you want and she's not getting much back, your relationship is in deep trouble.

At this point, you could formalise that arrangement. You could literally pay someone for sex. But note that you're no longer in relationship territory here. The formalised nature of it means that you're dealing with a different conceptual category - prostitution.

If he'd drop the women are whores narrative (IMO it's akin to 'men are rapists') people might consider his points better. I feel like he's a cross between a MRA and a Red Piller.

A sizable minority of women for instance say they don’t think a man should pay on a first date, but “if he’s offering” very few women will say no. If you want to renounce prostitution, you have to say no every time no matter what bitches! Feel the burn!
