Literature for boys, young men, and men?

Hatchet and My Side of the Mountain are great for tween aged boys. The Black Stallion series would be nice for younger boys. Other people have already mentioned Ender's Game, but don't forget Ender's Shadow which is the same story from a different boy's perspective. There are also a ton of books in that series. The Wheel of Time series has tons of young male characters that all grow up in different ways, plus it has magic.

Any and everything by Alexander Dumas. I have two small boys and I cannot wait until they learn to read, and I can not wait to share all these great adventures with them. Dumas' Count of Monte Cristo is my personal favorite work of fiction. I almost want to finish learning French so I can read original manuscripts. That book touches on so many situations that men will face at some point. Betrayal, love lost, revenge, unjust punishment, patience, loyalty, etc. and what gave our hero victory? Education. He conquered his enemies by being educated by a mentor at first then surpassing that mentor and knowing he needed to continue his education. The Three Musketeers addresses many similar issues. I also like the ongoing concept that no man is an island and being a member of a team only adds strength necessary to overcome. I really dislike an army of one mentality. So many classics are geared towards young men. Lord of the Flies, 1984, Ender's Game, and Catcher in the Rye is a MUST read for all boys in their early teens.

Read ASOIAF. It is boy and girl friendly, but it is better than the shit my Literature AP made me read this summer.

A little late here, but my Dad read me The Hobbit and the Lord of the Rings, to which I am eternally great-full. Other great books that he had me read were: 9 Princes in Amber, etc by Rojer Zelazny; and The Riddle of The Stars by Patricia A Mckillup. I also really enjoyed reading the redwall books,the earlier Clive Cussler books, The Sword of Truth Series, and the Song of Ice and Fire series when I was a kid.

TL;DR: The Hobbit, The Lord of The Rings, and The amber Series all shaped my childhood/person, and I am so glad my dad read/gave them to me!

I always liked Willard Price as a boy (round about age 8 or 9). Two brothers trying to capture animals in all sorts of weird and wonderful locales.

'Sink the Bismark,' by CS forester, was a big treat when I was a kid. 'Wind, Sand, and Stars,' was another great. It's by Antoine De St. Exupery, the great French writer and aviator. Anything about Shackleton is sure to amaze. Older boys should be handed the novels of Raymond Chandler or even Doctorow's 'Billy Bathgate.' The Celestial Omnibus,' and 'The Snows of Kilimanjaro and other Stories,' might be enjoyed by teens.

Also, don't forget the Patrick O'brian series, including 'Master and Commander,' and Lewis's 'Horatio Hornblower' books. These are wonderful. Several years ago a work acquaintance asked me just your question, and I brought in a few of the O'brian books. When I next saw her she said both her husband and her son were devouring the whole series! Also, J.Henri Fabre's books on insects are great literature. He seems incapable of writing a boring sentence, and is especially accessible to young folks.

I know it's not a book, but a TV show called Gurren Lagaan is a satire/humorous/awesome look at masculinity, insecurities, and coming of man story.

As for books: I personally enjoyed anything by Kurt Vonnegut, i.e Slaughterhouse Five.

There is a lot by Robert A. Heinlein that is appropriate. My all time favorite is his Citizen of the Galaxy.

Say what you will he tackled a lot of tough issues in this brief book: abandonment, slavery, other cruelty and left a very strong impression that in the end you need to do what is right.
