So I have nowhere else to post this, and unfortunately yahoo answers isn't coming through the same way it does normally.

Short(ish) story:

I was recently informed by a woman I slept with years ago in another city (call her 'Jen', I guess?), that she is the mother of my three year old daughter - well, more pertinently, that I have a three year old daughter.

Jen's story is: She was an acquaintance I would hook up with when I'd visit my hometown, I live elsewhere. She got pregnant (I was the only man she had slept with), found out, but 'knew' I would have wanted an abortion or not to father(she's a southern gal of faith). She was raised without a father, which really impacted her, so she decided it was worth it to deceive to a man who was in love with her for years (call him 'Adam'). She slept with Adam, and weeks later told him he had gotten her pregnant. She says she deceived him intentionally, as the child having a father was the most important thing, and he was dependable. They got married before the child was born, and have been married since.

After three years of living this lie, she feels tortured by overwhelming guilt, having lied to Adam, and to me, and for the child not knowing her 'real father'. She has never been in love with Adam, and feels she cannot live the lie anymore. She came to me to tell me this, and ask that I go home to raise the child, step in as the real father, while she tells Adam he is not, and leaves him. This way the child will still have a father if Adam does not stick around. Adam has apparently been loyal and loving, is an amazing father, and simply does everything right - Jen's only issue is that she doesn't love him, and she doesn't want a life with him. Adam is apparently madly in love with the child, and hasn't a clue.

Above is the story she told me. I would say she does seem overwhelmed by the guilt, and is clearly being selfish - she was selfish at first to not tell me and lie to this man, and now she is selfish that she cannot carry through, and would scar this man's life with knowledge of the feigned love and fatherhood (though he is the father, no less than any other for what he has done).

My situation, is that I know I cannot do this for her. I currently live across the country, and am in the midst of succeeding at my life dream for a career (which has taken years and years of blood and sweat). Though only about a year into it, I am rather madly in love with the most amazing woman I've ever met, in one of the healthiest relationships I've ever seen. I don't want to go ruin this man's (Adam)'s life. I don't want to help this manipulative woman mother a child. Honestly, the child is 3 years old - I have not met her, and I don't have any longing to. And I am also willing to admit I am selfish - I want nothing more than to fall in love, live in love, have a family with someone I love and love them - I fear, I am absolutely terrified, that this could ruin all of that.

Thus I told Jen that I cannot do this for her, and if she would allow me to, would like to not hear of it again, and would like to continue my life. She says she will grant me this - and has so far.

I know everyone here is likely to be skeptical of my fatherhood, but I implore you advise me as though I am the father. There are many independent, converging pieces of evidence from different people that make it almost certain I am the father. I am avoiding tests as to avoid what they could precipitate - further emotional turmoil that could influence Jen's decisions, and also legal matters that could ensue. I also wonder if I do not want to actually know for sure...

So I have made my decision regarding leaving my life to return to raise this child.

Here is my dilemma:

My current relationship with ('Mary') is still developing, and still sometimes unsure as we are stuck at a large distance right now (across the country from one another). We have been back and forth in deciding whether or not it is healthy for us to try the long distance, and stick through it while I finish my training. I don't think we are at a point where we can handle this. If we'd been together for years, or maybe were in the same place, well I'd tell Mary about this, and she'd understand - but I fear it could end us, or severely damage us, especially holding things together from a distance like this.

Is it my obligation to tell Mary? If so, when? Now? Later? Does the lack of 100% certainty play into this?

This has all made me feel like a monster. Friends tell this isn't true, that this isn't my fault, but I now feel like there are no right answers as to what to do with the child, and with Mary. No matter what I do it seems wrong. Please, any help, any words would be appreciated...

Thanks for listening.

tl;dr (can't believe I'm trying this) - just informed i have a 3 year old child, the mother tricked someone else into fathering as she thought I would not have wanted to. she now wants out of that relationship (he is a good father, she just doesn't love him) - she wants me to come back to be the father, she fears leaving him and telling him he isn't the father will leave the child fatherless. I do not want to give up my current life to go raise the child. I am currently in love. I don't know if I am supposed to tell the person I am dating, or when and how it would be appropriate. I am 99.5% sure the child is mine, but will not get tested to avoid furthering the situation emotionally for the mother, or legally. any advice appreciated
