Parents can also teach their children:

How to talk about things when necessary and when standing up for yourself (physically) is needed

Why song lyrics or jokes that put people down are not OK

How to speak up when someone is saying hurtful things to someone

About safe ways to help someone who is being physically hurt

It is important that children develop healthy relationship skills. Be sure the children in your life are treating everyone with respect.

P.S. I don't necessarily agree with everything above, I just made it gender-neutral.

This is a prescription on how to train your son to be a doormat, not on how to respect women.

Respect for anyone else comes first by having respect for yourself. If you understand why you should be respected and are self confident then respecting others comes naturally. It's when boys have low self worth and they think they have to trick or force others to like them that's when things become dicey.

I was going to joke and say, "I bet a woman came up with this."

But I looked, and it looked like I was only half-right. The program was co-founded by Ted Waitt of the Waitt Foundation and Esta Soler of Futures Without Violence. But I had doubts. I looked a little deeper, and Cindy Waitt, Ted's sister and a big proponent of the program, called it "Futures Without Violence's 'Coaching Boys into Men." Perhaps she's being humble, but I think it means that Esta Soler played a larger part in the creation of this program than Ted did.

I know, it's pretty shaky, but I'm going to roll with it anyway. My conclusion? A woman is telling men how to tell boys how to be men.
