19-year-old woman who punched an elderly man unconscious in the street, causing him to fall to the ground, hit his head and then die a week later, is cleared of causing his death. Instead, she was charged with "wounding" and given a six-month curfew

She says she likes laid back working man’s pubs because of their karaoke and dancing. What?

I’m not sure what her agenda is here, but she’s not describing a working man’s pub. A bar that’s mostly men that focuses on dancing and karaoke is probably a gay bar, not a working men’s bar. I’ve spent some time in England and in a working man’s pub, the guys are hanging out and talking, maybe throwing some darts. They’re not dancing with each other and doing karaoke. The American equivalent would be a sports bar: big screen TVs, maybe some pool tables and gaming machines, not dancing and karaoke.

"Men's clubs" = "working class venues". There's a picture of one in the article. I don't think they've been male-only spaces for a long time but maybe they're just called that still.

If she means dive bars or pubs vs night clubs, then that’s what she should say. Bars that offer karaoke and dancing are catering to women. They are not men’s pubs, so why is she incorrectly referring to them that way? There must be a reason.

I just told you... the venues are literally called "working men's clubs" as per the sign displayed on the one in the article but are really these days just grotty pubs, a term she also uses.

I'm not seeing anything nefarious in it.

Or part-time clubs that are mainly used for abodes.

I don’t think Working Men’s Clubs were limited to men. They’ve always included women and children — families, by extension. The only thing I’m unsure of is if they still require a membership to use the club

It’s Gentlemen’s Clubs that only allowed men. Pretty much all of those allow woman admittance if their husbands are members and some allow women to be members

Why waste time commenting a hairhead's blogpost-equivalent on the local paper? that mirror article is just a retyping of the original piece here:

Yes it's stupid, and no wonder. A quick look at her page shows she mostly does basic write-ups on big news items sourced from wire services and the main papers, and the occasional local interest story. "Rookie journalist with little insight says stupid shit" is what this thread could be titled.

Who cares? Am I supposed to be outraged?

[–]SouthernSeeker 3 points4 points5 points 3 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

That... that doesn't sound like any "working man's pub" that I've ever been in. I'm not much of a bargoer, and maybe things are different in the UK (though the famous ballad of the anti-puritan says that at least they used to be more similar to ours), so it may just be a cultural thing, but still...

Anyway, if she's having a good time and not hurting anyone, I see no problem here. Good for her.

[–]63daddy 2 points3 points4 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Exactly. I don’t know why someone gave you downvote. What she describes simply isn’t a working man’s pub.
