A new agreement between Norway’s football association and the country’s international players will lead to men and women receiving the same financial compensation for representing their country, with the men making a financial contribution to the women’s team.

So that's how equality works.

In what players’ union boss Joachim Walltin believes to be the first deal of its kind, the Norwegian FA has announced it is almost doubling the remuneration pot for the women, from 3.1 million Norwegian kroner (£296,000) to a total of 6 million kroner (£574,000). This includes a contribution of 550,000 kroner by the male players, money they currently receive for commercial activities undertaken as part of the national teams. “Norway is a country where equal standing is very important for us, so I think it is good for the country and for the sport,” Walltin added.

It's like paying alimony except that they were never married to the woman's team.

I think this'll pave the way for more of these things happening. We'll soon see money being taken from the Men's teams and given to the women's, regardless of the chasm in revenue brought in. Merit goes right out the window. Way to straighten up the pay gap! Wtf kind of times are we living in. You see this news in the papers being welcomed and commended, and they make it sound like it's absolutely fair and deserved, and how it's supposed to be, while the men giving up a cut of their money is barely mentioned.

while the men giving up a cut of their money is barely mentioned.

I question whether this was voluntary. I'll bet the men never had a vote or voice in the matter.

that's what I was wondering too. Maybe some did, but some certainly didn't, and that alone makes it wrong. Of course, even if they had no say in it, they wouldn't say anything. There's too much pressure. it's really pathetic at this point, this is not equal rights, this is privilege and benefits.

[–]EricAllonde 5 points6 points7 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

So long as they also take money from female models and give it to male models, who only earn a third of what female models earn on average, then I guess that's OK.

What's that you say, feminists? Those female models deserve their higher pay because they bring in more money for the companies that hire them? It doesn't matter that the cause is nothing to do with effort or talent on the part of the models, but really just because female consumers spend more and are more influenced by models in advertising? Male models have male privilege anyway so they're not getting a single cent from the women?

Well, in that case: fuck right off.

Tennis already does it

And just like that, nobody wants to play for Norway anymore

[–]summonblood 13 points14 points15 points 7 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

This will likely fail in the long run. Football (soccer) is one of the few sports where there aren’t any budget constraints to even the playing field. Getting the best players requires as much money as possible, so this will only hurt their teams potential for picking up talent, especially knowing that part of their salary is going to pay other people.

The fact that most people seem to forget about women’s sports is that it’s not sexism that makes women’s sports not as lucrative — it’s about ability. The best women in the world can’t beat the best high schoolers in the world in the sport. Men are just more athletic, stronger, faster, and have more endurance. People like to watch sports to watch the best people in the world compete. Women’s sports isn’t watching the best people compete, it’s watching the best women compete. If high schoolers can beat the best women in the world, of course they won’t be drawing as many crowds.

[–]wazzoz99 1 point2 points3 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Its not even about the ability of female athletes but total viewership. Women even prefer to watch male sports than female sports.

Eh, not even "The best high schoolers". The Australian women's soccer team lost 7 - 0 to a local under 15s boys team. I'm sure they weren't the absolute best group of under 15s boys that could have been put together either.

Will female models donate their pay to male models now for "equality"?

[–]Apolo180 3 points4 points5 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

("donate" )

And suddenly every other northern European country has several new players for their team, and crushes Norway who can only field those nobody wants.

“The feeling of being really respected is very important for them." Once again they expect to be respected without actually earning it.

[–]mikesteane 4 points5 points6 points 7 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I think a lot of women cannot believe why men are putting up with this, but are remaining silent because the resistance must come from us, otherwise we are not worthy of fair treatment.

[–]Apolo180 1 point2 points3 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

one of the main reasons this shit is going on is because men not only allow it, but a lot have bought in it and now are pushing it themselves. It's just freaking unbelievable.

And like you said, there are women who are aware of how instrumental men are propagating and endorsing the whole feminist mythos.

Sports athletes pay should tied to merit not gender. Just like any other job.

[–]mikesteane 1 point2 points3 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

The men should only play against women's teams, since that's all they're paid to do.

[–]dmfreelance 0 points1 point2 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

My wife played soccer in high school. She loves the sport, even though she no longer plays.

Whenever the world cup comes on, she always gets excited to watch the men play. When I asked about womens' world cup, she said it just isn't as exciting. She said they're slower and they aren't as strong, so watching isn't as fun.

hmmmmm
