Nobody knows and the reality is that it's impossible to know. You'd have to be better than the police at determining if an accusation is false or not.

Proven false accusations are 2-8% so feminists will quote the 2%. The grey area of accusations that are not proven either true or false is huge (80-90% I think) so it is probably somewhere in between

[–]ThirdTurnip5 points 5 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

Nobody knows.

Accusers do.

it's impossible to know

Actually it is.

A high profile case from Australia illustrates that.

Gable Tostee put a physically abusive woman out on his balcony. Frightened, she attempted to climb off and fell to her death.

What was interesting about this case is that unknown to her he was secretly audio recording. So police, the courts and media all had to deal with the truth.

He was found not guilty of murder but has since been persistently harassed by women's groups. I suspect the reason they're hounding him is because they're desperate to discourage other men from doing as he did.

If not for that recording he could have been subject to the typical all-men-are-evil campaign and portrayed as a vile domestic abuser and murderer.

What would happen if today, all men who hook up with women for sex started secretly recording those encounters?

Police would very quickly learn the true rate of false accusations.

The incidence of real date rapes should also diminish sharply.

[–]Yoramus1 point 5 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

What would happen is that recording will be outlawed with some excuse.

And anyway it's not going to happen soon. For one, I wouldn't be glad to record all of my sexual encounters, sorry for that.

The point is that outside of the small percentage of cases where it is possible to know, all of the others are in the he said she said territory.

The reality is that in order to do justice to some women the only way is to do a greater injustice to all men. Normal people stop here, man-haters instead will push for the greater injustice thing

[–]ThirdTurnip1 point 5 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

What would happen is that recording will be outlawed with some excuse.

It is already illegal in many places. And in this case I think the prosecution attempted to have them deemed inadmissible but the judge allowed them.

Regardless.

Instant guilt by media is the norm. All it takes is an accusation. Your chances in court are also extremely slim. If a false accuser doesn't make any slip ups in her statements or testimony, you're fucked.

If you possess recordings which absolutely prove your innocence, even if it's illegal to make such recordings where you live, wouldn't you rather publish those and risk being convicted of that much lesser crime than being wrongly convicted for rape?

[–]antilopes0 points 5 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

What would happen is that recording will be outlawed with some excuse.

A psychologist might classify that as catastrophising. Without foundation you are jumping to a bad prediction that makes you feel powerless.

Gabe Tostee's recording was perfectly legal and it did indeed save him from what could have turned very nasty. Given his lifestyle of picking up drunken randoms each week his precaution was very sensible. Whereas I have never spent a second of my life worrying about false accusation, it just isn't a thing with my lifestyle.

I read the full transcripts, I consider him 100% innocent. Some have criticised him putting her out on the balcony but I think it was quite reasonable. Interestingly I vaguely remember hearing the transcripts, but I don't think the tapes were in fact released. Memory is creative.

There are oodles of single party countries and states, there is nothing stopping anyone from running a security system like that and it will give peace of mind to a healthy person. Nobody needs to know it exists, and you can forget about it other than testing that it works occasionally. Disks are cheap, it can store years of audio and entrance hall data without overwriting.

If it doesn't give peace of mind, that is a sign that professional help is advisable. An anxiety that is immune to evidence is a danger sign, maybe just of uncontrolled anxiety but it could also indicate an incipient delusion and these can get rapidly harder to treat if not dealt with promptly.

[–]antilopes0 points 5 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

I don't know why but I've seen a few people repeating this misinformation on here lately. You will not find a reputable source for it. BTW feminists normally quote the 2% - 8% "range".

In the 1970s the first major book on rape gave 2% and the source of that is no longer extant but it would have been from the NY rape squad and it could only have been for proven false since estimates of total FA were much higher. Some still quote 2% because the book is still read. This sub periodically erupts into glorious dramatic slap-fights over the 2% figure, it hasn't happened for a while so it might be due soon.

The famous 2%-8% figure is not a range, it is two different measures. 2% is given as a lower bound of the true rate, it is the individually provable rate as found by a couple of major studies. See Heenan 2008 and the UK CPS 2010, both are worth reading in full. Note the cover sheets for both are misleading, read the whole report summaries.

8% or 10% is widely accepted in the field as a typical upper bound. There are other figures, there have been many studies.

If it were a range, 4% would be a possible true total rate. It isn't. It is not plausible the total rate could be only double the individually provable rate. 8% - 10% is a fair range of typical findings for the upper bound of total rate, so if you want a true range of estimates for total FA I'd say 6% to 10%.

Note the cases in the total rate are not individually provable. The total rate is sometimes the % of cases which were individually judged to be probably false, at the 51% standard. There will be true rapes classified as false, and there will be undetected FA in the main bulk of complaints classified probably true. These undetected FAs have already been allowed for in the average. There is a theory that exists exclusively in MRA-land that these undetected FAs had not been accounted for because the 8% or 10% figure was for "proven false". That is incorrect.

There are a small number of studies that give a high proven false rate, Lisak gave 6% in a campus study. But these are not typical results and there is no reason to elevate those outliers as The One True Truth.

Different standards are possible, and some MRAs make a religion out of the FBI's UCR guideline which asks for rigorous investigation before classifying a case as false. Briefly, LOL. The FBI has no budget or authority to make that happen, and police seldom have time. If a report does not have a reasonable hope of being resolved and the complainant has evidence of being dodgy, as many do, then it may get dumped in the "unfounded" bin.

[–]SokratisJ7 points 5 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

I keep seeing 2% through 10% but they don't count to a lot of situations those are only the ones that are fully taken to court and proven I found this though

"Sandra Newman points to research from the British Home Office showing that in the early 2000s, of the 216 cases that were classified as false allegations, only six led to an arrest."

https://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-45565684

[–]antilopes0 points 5 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

those are only the ones that are fully taken to court and proven

No. Also it isn't 2% through 10%, the numbers measure different things. It isn't a range and none of those figures come from courts.

2% is a commonly accepted estimate for provably false complaints. See Heenan 2008 for the most detailed study on this. They found 2.1% of complaints were judged false enough to prosecute, and either prosecuted or used to force the complainant to withdraw the complaint.

The UK CPS study in 2010 is much easier reading and has a collection of case summaries which is enlightening as to how FAs happen.
They took all the cases for a year or so. About 8% had been classified as false originally. They reanalysed the cases and found about 2% from memory met the CPS guidelines for eligibility to prosecute as FA, which requires being individually provably guilty. There is no conflict in those two figures, they measure different things. The first is cases classified probably false, not provably false. The average figure is intended to be accurate but the individual cases are often very uncertain. I regard the current cover sheet for the report as highly misleading, it gives the impression the original figure was wrong.

False accusations are horrible and can be devasting, but most of them are not even if an individual is named.

"What’s equally important to know, however, is that false rape accusations almost never have serious consequences...."

Nope. Almost any false rape accusation connected to a name has devastating consequences. The male is effectively ruined for life.

[–][deleted]6 points 5 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

Frighteningly often.

I once knew a girl who was a friend of my sister. If you mentioned any male during conversation, she would announce "he raped me". Then, if you mentioned another male, she would again announce "he raped me as well".

I once sat with her on a 20 bus journey with my sister, every time we mentioned a male, she would announce loudly how he raped her. The other passengers were looking at her horrified, and probably felt pity for her.

She was mentally unstable, and would take an overdose once a week and then go into the local Police station to tell them, so that they have to take her to the Hospital to have her stomach pumped.

She admitted that she did this for attention, no other reason, just attention. I suspected she also made rape accusations against random men for attention as well.

I can't stress enough how men need to be careful. Luckily, those that knew this girl knew she was making it up for attention, but imagine if the wrong person over heard the conversation and they speak to the Police.

Simply the mere accusation of rape is enough to completely destroy a man's life... women know this, and use it to their advantage.

[–]antilopes3 points 5 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

That is facticious personality disorder, it is relatively rare. Someone mentioned another case of it on here last week.

BPD (Borderline Personality Disorder) also is notorious for producing false accusations. BPD causes difficulty regulating emotions, constant anxiety over separation, and a tendency to flip between love and hatred. They fall in and out of love with bizarre rapidity. Desperate situations call for desperate measures. People with BPD are prone to feel they are in an overwhelming emergency, false rape accusations are just a part of a torrent of desperate behaviours. The complainant generally has a history and will be quickly dismissed by police as unreliable.

Unfortunately in both cases they are at very high risk of genuine rapes.
They are also frequently exploited by men who see them as "easy meat", or to put it very kindly, who don't question why these women are so surprisingly affectionate based on such a small and brief association.

Personality disorders (PDs) are typically caused by the combination of chronic abuse in childhood that turns their genetic susceptibility into a full-blown personality disorder. The combination of genetic and parenting factors means PDs are very commonly multi-generational, thought the exact disorder expressed often changes e.g. a narcissist parent often produces BPD in the child.

This is interesting, I didn't know there is a name for it.

Her friends around her did not react every time she through out another false rape accusation, they seemed to be quite used to it.

What I found fascinating, was that every time she shouted out "he raped me" she was actually smiling, like she got some sort of high from it.

The proven false accusation (case dismissed as baseless) rate for cases brought to the police is 2-8%.

The proven rape (conviction) rate is about the same. Would you think anyone saying saying true accusations are rare to be disingenuous based on that stat? I would. Which is why I think the same of the false accusations are rare arguments.

In 85%+ of cases there isn't enough evidence to know what really happened. "False accusations are really rare so he probably did it and got away with it." is not an acceptable message, but it is one said every day.

In order for false accusers to be convicted, the DA has to be willing to press charges. Due to the narrative that punishing proven liars would hurt rape victims, that is viewed as discouraging rape victims from coming forward and political/career suicide. Therefore, they rarely do.

For example last year someone actually said it out loud. The article was removed for not being PC in 2020, but was archived ...

https://web.archive.org/web/20191109005334/https://www.chicagotribune.com/sns-bc-us--false-rape-report-20191029-story.html

Prosecutors in Kansas are dropping all charges against a University of Kansas student accused of falsely reporting a rape, saying they feared publicity surrounding the case could discourage sexual assault victims from coming forward.

Douglas County District Attorney Charles Branson said in a statement Monday that the three felony counts of making a false report were dropped after much discussion. His office believed in the merits of the case, he said, but the "cost to our community and the negative impact on survivors of sexual violence cannot be ignored," reports The Kansas City Star.

"We are concerned this case, and the significant amount of misinformation surrounding it, could discourage other survivors from reporting their attack," Branson said. "That is unacceptable."

People rape. People falsely accuse. People falsely accused without evidence shouldn't be branded rapists. People raping and falsely accusing should both be punished, but there needs to be evidence.

[–]cld86 points 5 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

I have seen statistics saying about 5-10% of rape accusations are false. However, remember that these are only accusations formally made to police. If someone tells their family and friends that someone raped them, that won't be counted in the statistics, even though it can cause a loss of reputation for that person.

[–]Men-Are-Human5 points 5 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

I would say, a lot more than we get told. Realise that most don't get counted because the police are afraid of the backlash if they arrest a false accuser.

https://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2018/oct/7/false-sex-assault-reports-not-rare-reported-studie/

[–]Detective-Efficient5 points 5 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

A multi-site study of eight U.S. communities including 2,059 cases of sexual assault found a 7.1 percent rate of false reports (Lonsway, Archambault, & Lisak, 2009). https://cdn.atixa.org/website-media/atixa.org/wp-content/uploads/2016/03/12193336/Lisak-False-Reports-Moving-beyond.pdf

You will often hear that that's extremely rare. But there is one problem - this is the amount of cases that were proven false reporting. The conviction rate in rape cases is about 5/230 or 2%. (https://www.rainn.org/statistics/criminal-justice-system) Therefore, real accusations are even less prevalent, aren't they? No. In Reality, we simply don't know, as the vast majority of cases is neither proven true nor false. We simply don't know.

[–]bearstevenlee2 points 5 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

Girls making false rape accusations should be sued. And if they can't prove their accusation, they should pay for lawsuits. No man has to disprove their accusation. If they can't back up their accusation, they are the one who has to pay up. Disgusting mindset.

[–]antilopes1 point 5 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

Hey, you should be a member of /UnpopularOpinion. They post that at least once a week, though most don't go full crazy and suggest abandoning the principle of innocent until proven guilty just for one specific offense.

You can't do that in countries with an British-derived legal system such as the US.
I suspect the Constitution would also prevent it under the right to due process. But I'm always wrong about US law.

[–]Lostandalone5552 points 5 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

2 to 10% of accusations were found to be false, but only for those who ADMITTED they lied/exaggerated. So the true number is higher

[–]kepz31 point 5 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

The vast majority of studies come out with 2-10% of accusations are false

[–]Detective-Efficient4 points 5 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

Are proven false. And about as much are proven true.

Prove that the statement "Bigfoot is real" is false. It's impossible, no matter the likelyness. Does that mean Bigfoot does exist? If not, then it could still very well be a false claim. But people leave that out. The general public actually believes that 90% of accusations are TRUE based on the suggestive phrasing. We do not say only 2% of accusations are true. We say 2% get convicted. But here we are saying 2-8% are false.

[–]RagnaroFirelord1 point 5 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

to men?

[–]kepz31 point 5 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

well... just all rape accusations I would assume

[–]antilopes1 point 5 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

No that is just the figure for women. Statistics for men have a whole mess of extra differences, they are not comparable and I don't think false accusation has been measured.

Conventional wisdom for cops is that straight men would not make a false accusation of rape by a man. And very few men report rape by a woman, not enough to make any statistics with.

[–]Wisemanner1 point 5 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

The 2% was from Koss, I believe, and not based on any factual evidence (like almost everything else that woman came up with). A USAF study came out with a much higher figure - I cannot remember what it was, but it may have been higher than fifty per cent, I think.

[–]antilopes0 points 5 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

The US Airforce study found about 20% false, a much higher rate than most other studies though that might reflect the peculiarities of the population involved. It was USAF investigators investigating USAF staff on air bases all around the world in the last half of the 1970s. The study is not extant, there was one claim that a guy obtained a copy but he never delivered the evidence. For practical purposes it doesn't exist.

Later someone did an absolutely bizarre rehashing of the study, in which they claimed to have divined that the majority of the cases, which were "undeterminable", were 99% false accusations. It was deeply weird, wrapped in insane pseudoscience and has exactly zero credibility. Which is why it is almost never mentioned in the field except to point out its faults.

[–]Ody_ssey1 point 5 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

There's no study and figure on this. All proven to be lied cases are documented as not enough evidence.

[–]-Cyber_Renaissance1 point 5 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

53% of rape cases are false!

According to science/statistics: It's correct to not believe a raped woman because there is 3% more of a chance of her lying than saying the truth!

[–]aragonphx1 point 5 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

However, the meta-analysis doesn’t say this. Instead, it states that “at least 5%” of such accusation are “confirmed false reports” and “potentially many more false report cases” exist. In fact, the meta-analysis lists four different studies of “suspected” false allegations and “found false reporting rates above 40%.”

https://www.intellectualtakeout.org/beware-of-the-fact-checkers/

[–]Wisemanner1 point 5 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

Now that it's been mentioned, I remember one of the early claimers of "only two per cent are false", was a female detective in New York, who, I now remember reading, based her claim on no actual evidence. The other was Koss - the woman who claimed women who had had sex while drunk have been raped, and, women who did not like the way they had been looked at had been sexually assaulted.

In the latest piece of feminist b/s Laura Bates claims men have a greater chance of being raped themselves than falsely accused. She cites the fact that there are only a small number of convictions in the UK for falsely accusing a man of rape. And, in this, she is right, because charging women for falsely accusing is not considered to be "in the public interest". (At least they have the good sense to occasionally make an example of a false accuser, since they are well aware that to let all false accusers off would only make matters worse.) Where she is wrong, is remaining silent about the known number of false accusations, which are many times more than those actually charged with the offence. Only a tiny minority are charged. The actual number of false accusers is not known, because the figures are massaged. For example, cases of women making accusations that the police dismiss as impossible, are not recorded at all. A further 14% (yes it's about that - it varies slightly, of course) are put into a category termed "no crime". These are where a woman has claimed she raped, where the police have investigated the claim, and where they have found, with certainty, that she was not raped. (The latter point is important, because women' groups insist that the claim must have been proven to be false before the case an be termed "no crime".) Why is the case termed "no crime". Various technicalities are used. The point that needs to be made is that in these 14% of cases, a woman did indeed claim she was raped, and it was proven, beyond doubt, that she lied. Why is it done? Simple. It's done to keep the number of false accusations low.

So the problem with determining how many false accusations there are is next to impossible with any accuracy. This is because the figures are manipulated and fiddled, and too many people have an interest in keeping the figures artificially low - for example, police officers wanting to be "good boys" and not denied promotion for politically correct reasons - which is a very big thing these days.

The easiest and best way of responding to anyone who claims false cases of rape are rare is to say "So are proven cases of rape." (In the UK - a country of about 65 million people, just about 2000 cases a year.)

[–]69_Watermelon_4201 point 5 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

It’s generally accepted that about 10% of all rape accusations are intentionally false. That means the accuser maliciously accused. About 10% of rape accusations are confirmed cases of rape.
