This is a really good point.

I remember seeing some studies posted where men were shown to stay in unhappy marriages more than 10 years longer than women did. Women would give it a year or two before giving up whereas men would stay for more than a decade.

The biggest predictive factor for how long a marriage would last was how happy the wife was. The husband's happiness basically didn't matter.

The biggest reason for this though is likely how divorce and child custody is treated by the courts. Men break up with their girlfriends equally as often as the reverse. It's only in marriages where we lose gender parity (where 70%+ of divorces are initiated by the woman).

I can see why someone would leave a marriage they are unhappy with. But I don't see how that follows into abandoning your children. Tons of people still at least ask for visitation with their kids after a divorce, if not shared custody.

Kick out your wife if she's abusive. Don't walk out on your kids.
