Yeah that's pretty accurate. While rare, in a divorce, men used to get custody of the children. That was because men were a) able to support them and b) were responsible for education their children and teaching them how to be responsible adults (which meant that men were in charge of older children and women were in charge of toddlers and infants).

Gender roles were a lot different back then. In part because this predates feminism, and also because the high infant mortality rate meant families had to have lots of children. Which turned women essentially into baby making machines. I'm sure that sucked for pretty much everyone involved, including both the father and the mother, but you won't ever hear feminists discussing that side of the story.
