Hi everyone!

I have found a lot of people criticising the phrase 'toxic masculinity' and wanted to shed some light on why a lot of that anger is misdirected. I agree that the term sounds pretty shitty at face value but it is one of the most important phrases to come out of the feminist movement in regards to making male lives better.

The definition of toxic masculinity is; " Toxic masculinity is thus defined by adherence to traditional male gender roles that restrict the kinds of emotions allowable for boys and men to express, including social expectations that men seek to be dominant (the "alpha male") and limit their emotional range primarily to expressions of anger. "

Inherent within this idea is that men are not inherently bad, nor un-salvageable, but that the patriarchy had a negative effect on men. We are discouraged from expressing emotions and are socially encouraged to be angry rather than sad, leading to a lot of problems like serious mental health issues, suicide, and drug addiction.

I know that the first image that comes to mind when hearing the phrase is a stereotypical angry man-hating blue haired feminist, but you must look past the straw-man and acknowledge that of all things to attack feminism on, this idea is definitely not one of them.

I love you all and I really wish society could get to a point where all of use men could exist free from social pressures. To fight for that future, one thing we must all agree upon, is that it isn't our fault. Society placed toxic masculinity within us and it is up to us to try and be helpful and open to one another.
