Divorced in CA , active duty military taking home a net of $60k a year. 3 children, I have 20% custody and pay $23,500 a year in child support, ex wife makes minimum wage if that helps.

I am paying $12k yr vaginamony and $18k cs for 2 kids, grossing about 100k annually. It really depends on how much (or little) your ex made at her job. Yes CA is awful, I'm not sure of any state with worse laws for men besides maybe WA or NY.

What gets my goat about CA child support, is that it doesn't matter that the ex got remarried. She doesn't have to work and though we were ordered to both get full time work she's ignored it. So she was making about $25/hr before and now that she doesn't work claiming she makes $1600 a month. So i pay $450 a month for 2 kids and 50/50 split.

What I do know is that child support worksheets (in nearly every state) follow federal guidelines. Back in the day, the child support worksheets used to calculate debt you owed into the final calculation. Now they don't. About 5-7 years ago, I know the most I would have been responsible paying (worst case scenario according to the child support tables), would have been around $1100 for two kids.

Fast forward, and the child support tables changed. Now the upper limit worst case scenario is $1800 for EACH child. And the amounts cascaded backwards in a similar fashion.

That's a big jump.

I don't know too many people that could afford this under the new guidelines and tables. I know that my own experiences, plus education, etc... that I used to be able to try and shoot to afford for the first number, could not catch up if the second one was awarded.

What happened is that the whole worksheet and tables changed -- again, because this part of it is Federal, this methodology changed in many states.

It's still up to the state on who much of that worst case scenario they will "award" to the parent who must pay. It's still also up to them on how much they will deviate either downward or upward from those figures, based on circumstances.

The best thing to do is to find out what the rules around child support modification are in your state, then see if your situation or scenario meets those definitions. If it does, then you should initiate the review process.

As for California specifically, I also know there is no statute of limitations on back child support that is owed. Because the collection part of it works across federal guidelines, they will attempt to collect it from all sources of income regardless of what state you travel or move to.
