Why should it be a "decision" in the first place? We're not talking about what to name a child, whether or not they should be allowed to eat sweets and drink fizzy pop, or what fucking school to send them to, we're talking about an unnecessary, irreversible, detrimental alteration to a person's genitalia. As an adult who is older than my parents were at the time of my birth, I can see the value of my parents getting me vaccinated, and as for getting up early, it was usually me waking my parents up when I was a four year old. I cannot, however, see the value in having my penis mutilated. Having discussed the subject with my father, after a lot of stammering, and excuses, he basically admitted that the decision to alter my penis was about him, not me. Infant circumcision is an innately selfish practice.

Prevention of cancer: Individual studies and metaanalyses (1 2) show that penile cancer is significantly more common in uncircumcised people. This is true in 1st and 3rd world countries. Phimosis is also a risk factor for penile cancer, and when you correct for the cases with phimosis, being uncircumcised is no longer a risk factor.

STIs (not HIV): There is increased risk for Human pappiloma virus in uncircumcised men. This is associated with genital warts, penile cancer, and cervical cancer in women receive this infection from their male partners. I think this is becoming less of an issue now that the HPV vaccines are approved for men.

HIV: There have 3 trials (1 2 3) of using circumcision to prevent HIV acquisition in Africa. All 3 studies showed a benefit in the circumcision group, approximately a 60% reduction in risk of acquiring HIV. The 60% reduction means that if 10% of people in the control group got HIV, then 4% of people in the circumcision group got HIV. This likely only prevents female to male sexual transmission and would only be applicable in those groups. This does not prevent male to female transmission. Also, a significant amount of the infections in developed countries are from male to male sexual transmission and IV drug use. Whether this is a significant enough risk reduction to warrant circumcision in African countries is up for debate, but the studies are not applicable to the US.

What these studies fail to take into consideration is the rarity of penile cancer. All this fearmongering is deliberately misleading gullible parents. As I understand it, a man has more chance of getting breast cancer than penile cancer, statistically. How many men with breast cancer do you know? As for phimosis, that can be treated more often than not.

You said it, not me. It's unjustifiable to cut a kid because of this. Incidentally, I recently contracted an STI in an isolated moment of drunken stupidity and am on antibiotics for it. Having bits of my penis missing didn't protect me.

If I recall, a huge factor in this result was the fact that the men who were still recovering from wounds on their dicks were in no position to contract HIV, at least not via sex.
