Pretty certain the grandpa wasn't desperate for attention. It's teaching the child that giving love and affection the another can enable them to continue doing what it is they want. In this example blow bubbles.

I wonder if this nutcase mother had an issue with it being the father in law? If it was her father would she have minded? If family experience has taught me anything is that families are a cluster fuck of emotions, politics, competition and such. Nothing is so clear cut. What the columnist should have said is that its okay for the daughter to say NO. Not to scorn the old man for asking what he deemed to be a innocent and loving interaction between him and his Granddaughter.
