I think the argument has some merit (or I never would have posted it to AVfM or here) but I still wonder how they monetise fan-baiting. My response to the 2016 Ghost Busters movie was to decide not see it and rarely if ever discuss it. In my case the default setting is to not see a Hollywood movie so this was an easy decision.

Are people raging on these movies and then going to see them anyway? Or maybe buying merch?

I've been saying for decades that Hollywood mostly turns out crap and the best way to address this is to deprive them of your hard earned money. They only understand money so speak their language.

All too often I see people criticise Hollywood and then hand over their money anyway. Nothing changes.

[–]HikuroMishiro 20 points21 points22 points 3 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

While some of it is fan-baiting to an extent, a lot if it just down to political propaganda. Hollywood is far left, as is feminism (and other woke movements). The elite can afford to alienate half their audience in order to prop up their message. The studio might make 50 million on a movie instead of 100 million because they put some crap in what could have been a decent movie, but the directors, CEOs, writers, etc. all are still going to get paid the same whether they include their hateful content or not.

[–]CounterSpace91 points 3 years ago [recovered] (4 children) | Copy Link

What political propaganda is in movies? I think political propaganda is one of those things that you only see it when you are looking for it.

I've never noticed left wing propaganda in a film. And I have notices some female characters being strong, like in star wars, I don't think that's propaganda.

[–]foreverclassichunter 11 points12 points13 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Propaganda isn't meant to be noticed? It's meant to brainwash you ?

[–]KissMyAsthma-99 10 points11 points12 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

That's... difficult to believe.

There's nothing wrong with strong female characters, and to suggest otherwise is ridiculous. EVERYONE loves Sarah Connor in T1/T2. That's different than today's strong female characters, which are largely two dimensional and written only to one up every male in her sphere.

[–]CommissarSteel56 4 points5 points6 points 3 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link

Forgive me if this sounds aggressive as it is not my intention.

Firstly propaganda is not ment to be in your face unless it's main group is in control. (Eg. National Socialist propaganda posters) Just because you can't see it doesn't mean that there is not a message trying to be stated.

Secondly, there is a massive difference between a strong female character and a female character acting strong. Strong female characters are written to be relatable with flaws, aspirations, quirks and actual emotions to the situations around them incorporating them into the scene.

Female characters acting strong are paper thin, cookie cut out characters with few defining traits that only excentuate the good parts. There are no flaws beyond superficial ones that never get any depth or are so pointless that the character would not change if they were written out. Also they only interact with the background, situations and conflicts in way that puts focus on them and nothing else.

The difference between the two is pretty obvious. Which character would you rather have a conversation with? Pre Season 8 Daenerys or Rose Tiko?

[–]masterdarthrevan 1 point2 points3 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

If you don't think there is propaganda in film , you haven't been paying attention. There's a message in pretty much every movie and tv show, whether it's normalizing certain behaviors, delivering a warning to society, or trying to show you what the future could be like. Even ads are in movies ( when they drive certain cars or drink certain pops) i actively have to ignore it to not see it

[–]CommissarSteel56 4 points5 points6 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

When it comes to the topic modern films portrayal of men and women is quite skewed. For example women in modern movies (Popular Franchises) are shown to be near flawless beings with little to any relatable quirks and on the off chance that a flaw is shown it is only skin deep. Meanwhile men are are portrayed as either stupid, useless, single minded, or a combination of the three.

Now this isn't true with all modern movies, some actually have smartly developed characters with flaws and quirks that make them feel like real people. (Spiderman, Merida, most of the cast of The Bad Guys, just to name a few) The reason behind this, I believe, centers around the quality of the writing and the intent of the writing.

For example, Rings of power is written by a team of people whose intention was to basically preach to an audience using world which already had established lore instead of just writing to entertain. Meanwhile House of the dragons writers focused on delivering a entertaining story in smart way that does not talk down to or bastardises the source material for brownie points.

[–]DavidByron2 4 points5 points6 points 3 years ago (26 children) | Copy Link

Fan-baiting isn't a thing. For one thing it's described as a method to boost ticket sales and the reverse happened, so the method would have been abandoned. For another if the idea is to provoke anger by fans which the movie company can then react to with calls of "sexist" or "racist", then why are we seeing those accusations before the film is even shown? Clearly they aren't reactions to angry fans and if they just feel OK lying about that stuff anyway then there's no need to bait anyone -- just make up a story about how only bad people don't go to see this movie.

There's a simpler explanation.

"The message" is feminist anti-male hate propaganda. And the reason it's now put into all these movies is the same reason you see it promoted everywhere else; namely that the ruling class have decided that feminism is a benefit to them and so they promote it and throw money at it. The reason the ruling class back feminism is a more interesting question. It's because feminism is a right wing movement that passes itself off as left wing and so it's a perfect 5th column to undermine the real Left and divide the working class against itself. Basically the same sort of deal as all the racism that the ruling class promoted for a few centuries pitting black people against poor white people and native Americans; dividing the working class to endure the security of the ruling class. Much the same thinking as why the ruling class of 1920s Germany decided to promote the Nazis. They wanted to divide the working class and attack the Left.

Not that the ruling class agreed with the Nazis or the feminist ideology (or Al Qaeda that the US is still paying 21 years after 9-11). They didn't agree with any of these crazies. They found them useful.

Hollywood doesn't want to lose ticket sales but the ruling class are a powerful client and that means it's worth losing a bunch of regular customers to gain the backing of the ruling class as customer. Just like any time anyone makes a war movie they have to agree to the US armed forces conditions. If they don't the US government won't give them a bunch of money. it's worth losing some ordinary customers to comply with the government as customer.

[–]KochiraJin 5 points6 points7 points 3 years ago (25 children) | Copy Link

It's because feminism is a right wing movement that passes itself off as left wing and so it's a perfect 5th column to undermine the real Left and divide the working class against itself.

What makes feminism right wing? What criteria do you use to determine if something is left or right?

[–]TheStumblingWolf 7 points8 points9 points 3 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Seems to me the left/right spectrum is kind of a circle. It seems that when you go far enough out on the left or right it becomes hard to distinguish the differences.

[–]KochiraJin 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

That would suggest that the left/right axis is insufficient for classifying an ideology. If moving apart makes them resemble each other wouldn't that be better described as moving closer on a different axis?

[–]OldEgalitarianMRA 2 points3 points4 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I can see the profit in driving families apart. Two households, more consumers. With women working they get double the taxes and again more consumers.

Women fell for it. Men didn't care. Now women have to work and I wouldn't stay married to a woman who stopped working. Their plan succeeded. It was my generation that took it to heart and taught their daughters that marriage is optional and not a very good option at all.

[–]northseaview 2 points3 points4 points 3 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Demonising a demographic based on immutable characteristics is classic divide and conquer employed by elites. Feminists continually derail class solidarity and displace class action with meaningless tokenism. They increase the exploitation of poor working class men. They employ unproven antiscientific beliefs, and promote traditional gender norms so long as they benefit women or hurt men

[–]reverbiscrap 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Hey, it worked for the Civil Rights Movement! Feminism accomplished what centuries of chattel slavery, Jim Crow, rape, murder, torture couldn't: destroy the unity of a group.

[–]DavidByron2 -1 points0 points1 point 3 years ago* (19 children) | Copy Link

Well by definition right wing means supporting the authority / king / ruling class / elite.

It comes to mean that the left stands for equality and not respecting authority. ie that everyone deserves the same rights and the rich shouldn't get more stuff and rights and foreigners also deserve the same consideration as nationals, one race is as good as another, etc. In contrast the right says "charity begins at home" and of course you should treat people like yourself better and be suspicious of outsiders. Also that leaders must be supported because otherwise it's a threat to the security of the tribal group.

So this comes to means Socialism (no rulers or kings) is Left and those accepting of kings and an elite that should get stuff for doing nothing more than being born rich or elite is the Right. Censorship is authority applied to free speech so is right wing. Not all opinions are equal and the rulers have better rights and must impose their will for the good of society - a right wing view.

There's also psychological research showing the right tends to be more frightened and prudish / more disgusted by things, especially unfamiliar things. So for example gay sex is icky and disgusting if you're on the right, but they're also more likely to be disgusted by eg eating a candy that fell on the ground. Voting right wing is increased if the voter is frightened and some evidence suggests the reverse that people who are more secure vote Left more (or what they're told is Left but isn't when in the USA since both parties are right wing).

It's important for the elites to tell people feminism is Left for the movement to work for them better, and therefore calling feminism "Left" empowers feminism.

https://www.reddit.com/r/MensRights/comments/wmm5ja/calling_feminists_the_left_empowers_them/

You might say the Left is the New Testament view of morality and the Right is the Old Testament (although this is only a naive view of the bible and you can find plenty of communism in the OT) as characterized by the story of the Good Samaritan where Jesus expands the idea of who is my neighbour. In general Right wing thinking is dysfunctional in modern times where there isn't constant tribal warfare and there's no need to think other people are evil just because they don't look like you.

[–]KissMyAsthma-99 1 point2 points3 points 3 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link

No.

It comes to mean that the left stands for equality and not respecting authority.

Definitely no.

Censorship is authority applied to free speech so is right wing. Not all opinions are equal and the rulers have better rights and must impose their will for the good of society - a right wing view.

Shockingly... no.

Wow, there's just so much wrong in there that it's difficult to understand how it could have all come from one person. I've spent an hour on reddit today and you win the award for the most ridiculous thing I read during that time.

[–]DavidByron2 2 points3 points4 points 3 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Yeah... you're kinda stupid. Best not advertise it too much.

Try reading more or something.

[–]KissMyAsthma-99 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Alrighty. lol. Thanks for the laugh.

[–]masterdarthrevan -1 points0 points1 point 3 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

Looks like this dude failed civics

[–]KissMyAsthma-99 -1 points0 points1 point 3 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

Failed? More like dropped out in 5th grade and learned everything he knows from posters in the bathroom of the smoke shop.

[–]masterdarthrevan -1 points0 points1 point 3 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

It shows especially when your only argument is "shockingly no" with no rebuttal. Lol

[–]KissMyAsthma-99 -1 points0 points1 point 3 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

If someone rants for two paragraphs claiming the sun is 15 miles away in his uncle's backyard, an extensive rebuttal is neither needed nor appropriate.

[–]masterdarthrevan -1 points0 points1 point 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

On that we'd agree, but that's not what he said

[–]KochiraJin 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (9 children) | Copy Link

Well by definition right wing means supporting the authority / king / ruling class / elite.

If we go by that definition the only left wing ideology is anarchism. Even socialist countries have their elite class, someone has to plan the economy after all.

Censorship is authority applied to free speech so is right wing. Not all opinions are equal and the rulers have better rights and must impose their will for the good of society - a right wing view.

But if socialism is left wing how can restriction of speech be right wing when socialist countries are the most censorious?

It kind of sounds like your definition of left is "things I agree with" and the right is "things I don't like" rather than some logical grouping of ideology.

[–]DavidByron2 1 point2 points3 points 3 years ago (8 children) | Copy Link

Even socialist countries have their elite class

That's what you have to tell yourself I suppose. Capitalist CEOs get paid 1000x as much and billionaires even more. Stalin got paid about as much as a college professor. There's a clear difference.

socialist countries are the most censorious?

That's what you have to tell yourself I suppose. You ever think maybe your capitalist government tells lies about Socialist countries so you won't think to rebel against an obviously unfair system of the kings you have to worship?

It kind of sounds like your definition of left is

Sounds like you can't read what I wrote.

[–]KochiraJin 1 point2 points3 points 3 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link

Capitalist CEOs get paid 1000x as much and billionaires even more. Stalin got paid about as much as a college professor. There's a clear difference.

Yea, the CEOs can't order the common people sent to the glaug because they offend Stalin.

You ever think maybe your capitalist government tells lies about Socialist countries so you won't think to rebel against an obviously unfair system of the kings you have to worship?

The US president is one of the most criticized positions anyone can take. That criticism is heavily protected by the law. That's a far cry from a king that I'm forced to worship. Oh, and those same laws mean I don't have to listen to what the government says about socialist countries. I can check other sources like people who lived there or look at their policies on my own. You can't do that in places like China because their communist party is involved in all the companies and they block access to anything they deem unacceptable.

[–]masterdarthrevan 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Yea, the CEOs can't order the common people sent to the glaug because they offend Stalin.

If you think CEOs can't get ppl pushed into prison, you're in for a nasty surprise/rude awakening. They control your politicians and they always have.

[–]DavidByron2 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

the CEOs can't order the common people

That's exactly what they do.

But thanks for admitting you were wrong by changing the goal posts.

The US president is one of the most criticized positions anyone can take. That criticism is heavily protected by the law.

That's false. The first amendment only applies to federal government and even they have that law saying you can be arrested for saying stuff like "let's k*II the president" which I have to write all weird or I might get banned or a visit from the Secret Service. But if you think otherwise try posting about how you want to K the P on FB and see what happens.

That's a far cry from a king

CEO is a king.

I don't have to listen to what the government says about socialist countries

Sure you don't. And you don't have to listen to adverts about Coke either, lol.

I can check other sources like people who lived there

But you never have and never will because even a google search would lead you to countless poling results saying most of the people who have experienced both communism and capitalism in Eastern Europe want communism back and that Stalin is a national hero.

You can't do that in places like China

because you don't speak any Chinese.

[–]KochiraJin 1 point2 points3 points 3 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

That's exactly what they do.

When? Also the US doesn't have glaugs, so I imagine it's pretty hard to order people sent to them.

Also the goal post hasn't moved. You just don't want to accept that socialist countries also have their elite.

That's false. The first amendment only applies to federal government

And now I know you don't know what you are talking about. The first amendment applies to the entirety of the US government.

Oh, and do pay attention to what you read. I said criticism not threats of violence.

Sure you don't. And you don't have to listen to adverts about Coke either, lol.

Yep, no one is forced to watch advertising if the don't want to. There's always another option. It's not like you'll get sent to a re-education camp for disagreeing with a CEO.

But you never have and never will because even a google search would lead you to countless poling results saying most of the people who have experienced both communism and capitalism in Eastern Europe want communism back and that Stalin is a national hero.

Don't socialists always say "real communism has never been tried" in response to the atrocities committed by people like Stalin? Technically those people are correct. Communism never actually pops up because it's a utopian pipe dream that doesn't work in the real world. How can people want it back when it was never there to begin with?

because you don't speak any Chinese.

Rather than the language barrier, it's the communist party that's more of an issue.

[–]DavidByron2 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

the US doesn't have glaugs

More prisoners than any other country in the world. LOL. So ignorant.

The first amendment applies to the entirety of the US government.

You're a complete moron.

Don't socialists always say "real communism has never been tried"

You're thinking of you when defending capitalism.

the atrocities committed by people like Stalin

Are you referring to all the Nazis he killed? Are you a Nazi lover then?

it's a utopian pipe dream

So you admit you are wrong and Communism is better.

...that doesn't work in the real world

If it didn't work it makes you wonder why the USA spends billions trying to stop it, eh? Also China is kicking your sorry ass.

[–]KochiraJin 1 point2 points3 points 3 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

More prisoners than any other country in the world. LOL. So ignorant.

More people than most other countries in the world too. That's not really the dunk you think it is.

Are you referring to all the Nazis he killed? Are you a Nazi lover then?

Kinda funny that the insult you chose to deflect from the atrocities of Stalin was to say I love a different branch of socialism.

So you admit you are wrong and Communism is better.

It would be if not for one fatal flaw: It's a fantasy that doesn't work in the real world. At best you end up with something that looks like fascism.

If it didn't work it makes you wonder why the USA spends billions trying to stop it, eh?

Perhaps it's because of the atrocities that result from socialism?

[–]sanchopanza87 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Have you been living under a stone the last 130 years?

Left wing politics is the reason why hundred of millions of people in Russia and China perished in the 20th century.

Patriotic right wing politics in the US/UK is the only reason why we still have democracies in the world today.

[–]sanchopanza87 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

The movie industry will do whatever maximize their income.

In the current climate movie producers won't make a movie that is free of leftist brainwashing and forced "diversity", because there will be a backlash from the political and cultural elite, which will hurt their revenue.

Also, in a globalized world, it is a smart marketing strategy to use an Indian in the lead role, even if the movie takes place in middle age Europe, because it will increase the revenue in India.

Too bad for actual thinking adults/conservatives who can't make any sense of these movies though.
