Marriage today is a government contract. The fact that no fault divorce exists, and has been for decades in the USA, means that there is no good reason for men to be married anymore. Because, all she has to do is say that she is not happy, let the tears flow or even cheat, divorce and get cash and prizes.

Can anyone show me, as a government contract, how marriage benefits man, at all?

it's nothing more than indentured servitude.

As a contract? Possible tax benefits, perhaps better terms for mortgages and/or loans entered into jointly, simplification of handling your estate in particular if you die without a will and perhaps better protection of your parental rights in the event you separate.

so, pretty much nothing, while having nothing but life ruining shit attached

My ex ran away 2000 miles with an Xbox live boyfriend. The only option Washington state gave me was "no fault". But while this denigrates marriage itself, it did allow the divorce to only take 4 months and $350 so it didn't personally hurt me.

One perspective on Marriage is that it is a contract.
no-fault divorce eliminates that perspective on marriage.

If divorce outcomes are unequal, then simplifying divorce increases the inequality.

[–]velvetalocasia 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

How does this eliminate the contract character?

Under the old rules in England and Wales, anyone who wanted to split swiftly had to accuse their partner in a divorce petition of desertion, adultery or unreasonable behaviour.

Or rape/domestic violence.

Still, many other countries had no fault divorce laws for decades. It's a theoretical good move that only has benefits if the couple isn't already slinging dirt at one another...

Making divorce easier is not a good thing.

[–]velvetalocasia 2 points3 points4 points 4 years ago (10 children) | Copy Link

Why not?

[–]mikesteane -4 points-3 points-2 points 4 years ago (9 children) | Copy Link

Because people splitting up because they are too selfish to work out their differences does profound damage to their children and the harm then spreads out into the whole of society through the social problems thus caused.

[–]velvetalocasia 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (8 children) | Copy Link

That would require that the partners can work things out between them. Which very often is just not the case.

[–]peteypete78 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

This is why I think mandated couples therapy should be brought in.

[–]velvetalocasia 1 point2 points3 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Therapy only helps if the patient is willing to participate and work on their problems…..mandating it will not change that.

[–]mikesteane 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

It might become the case if there were no alternative.

[–]velvetalocasia -1 points0 points1 point 4 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

Because?

[–]mikesteane 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago* (3 children) | Copy Link

People will often take the easiest route. In some places, divorce is extremely rare as it was in pre-war Britain. What has changed is that it has become easy (in the short term) for people to divorce and society as a whole pays a big price for that.

[–]velvetalocasia 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

And you believe that made children „happier“? Having parents who where not able to separate?

[–]mikesteane 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago* (1 child) | Copy Link

It made them less likely to be delinquents. And it's likely that divorced parents then go on to have equally unhappy new relationships.

[–]auMatech -1 points0 points1 point 4 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

True, I wonder if this will impact rape and/or domestic violence statistics though.

My view is that shame exists for a very good reason and shaming should not have been eliminated in favour of self-esteem, which is something not everyone merits. Single mothers should not be held up as examples of strength and independence.

True. I just updated to 2022.4.

Oh, and it looks like Olivia Jack hit the wall, hard so, good luck with finding anyone that would want your single mother ass now. :D
