If only we could get women to try a bit harder.

But seriously the disparity in veterinarians salary is a classic example. Women vets want to work in the city on domestic pets. The high paying vet practices are rural where you're working with large, dangerous animals in terrible conditions. They're crying out for more rural vets, but none of the female graduates are interested.

In my department men earned more than the women on average. They also had on average 10 years more work experience. We also sometimes paid incoming women more to meet affirmative action goals. So, despite men earning more on average, the pay discrimination favored women, not men. The devil is in the details as they say.

Adding to my comment above, I think a big part of it is, yet again, evolutionary psychology. Men's brains have been programmed by evolution to see themselves as the providers and our job is a major factor in how we define ourselves. With women they feel like they've been a failure if they don't have any children. We don't necessarily think about these things but they clearly affect the way we operate. And this innate value is expressed in our society.

In STEM fields they definitely under perform compared to the men. Guys find technical stuff interesting and like their job. For the women it's simply a 9 to 5 grind.
