This was written on the side of a baby toy I was putting away at work we got in today and I damn near destroyed the thing reading this. It's from a company called Montessori Practical Skills part of a line called Educating Girls (IIRC), and on one of the side flaps it was going on schools for girls and about the importance of educating girls and how them being educated teaches them important life skills and how educated girls are less likely to be exposed to violence.
I mean, WTF? First off, why even make education a gendered issue? It's a no-brainer education is equally important for both boys and girls, and for many years boys have been badly falling behind due to this exact kind of favorable treatment female students get. Male students overwhelmingly comprise dropouts as a result of this and often have a harder time getting good-paying jobs they can live off of. And the whole part of violence exposure is so asinine to me, so it's okay for boys to be exposed and vulnerable to violence? And boys and men actually are more vulnerable to violence (it doesn't help that society still fails to acknowledge, condemn and take action against violence against boys and men, especially when committed by women and girls, which happens in much higher numbers than many believe or admit). This certainly doesn't help to equally protect them.
I'm really sick of this one-sided "equality" and how boys and men are constantly crapped on like this. So educating boys and seeing to it they aren't exposed to or vulnerable to violence evidently isn't important or not an issue. But wait, we'll get the usual retort of "But the violence men and boys face is disproprotionately lower than what happens to women and girls. Violence against women and girls is an epidemic." It just never changes. Ugh.
