I wonder if something happens on an instinctive level that turns people - especially women - off crying men?

The woman in this post knows she's done something wrong, but she can't help it.

My advice about these things is always: find one person, or maybe a couple, to open up to. No more. Not everybody. A lot of people can't take it.

Sounds more like she is just a very immature person. At 24 years old, she hasn't gained the capacity to understand and empathize with others. I have opened up to afew of my exes and never been made to feel gaslit or unappreciated. Not all women are like this, she's just a bad egg.

I don't know if she was a genuine poster, or if this was a made up story, but I'll take it for real because why not.

I think I understand where those sorts of feelings are coming from:

The reason women are like this goes back thousands of years for biological reasons. It's a survival mechanism.

The women who chose man who were not a good provider? Those kids starved and had no shelter.

The women who chose a man who was not a good protector? Those kids were stolen by the wolves and barbarous hordes.

So women adapted to giving a thumbs up in these two areas as something to look for in a man.

When this young man confided in his girlfriend she had pictures of him getting bullied in her head... Of another young man taking his lunch money away so he would have no resources left for her.

She had trouble visualizing him as a protector / provider after this. Thus becoming less attracted to him.

So, this is the sort of thing you should not open up to a girlfriend about. At least not if you want her to look at you as a desirable man.

Therapist here. Men definitely need to open up, the links to suicide are pretty clear. In saying that, choosing the right person, or woman, is crucial, and the timing and way you do it are also important. There's plenty of woman who feel closer and more attracted when men cry, if it's done right. Guided many through it. Mens mental health is in crisis, and telling me not to cry is insanely damaging, telling them it's ok perfectly ok to cry, but just like jacking off, timing, place, and choosing you company while you jack off is very important haha
