There's a Facebook post with a headshot of my husband and a statement that he was photographing and stalking a woman in a store and that he "admitted" (not true) to it. The post has been shared close to seven hundred times and someone managed to get at least his full name and where we live.

Aaaaand the folks who are taking the route of "but well, he was probably taking pictures of some hot chick and acting like he was just taking pictures of products for his wife to get out of trouble with her lololololol", this is the equivalent of "she's asking for it" when a girl wears a super short skirt to show off her tattoos and gets groped. Yes, my husband finds other women attractive and hot, so what? He likes to take pictures of my butt when I'm wearing my bikini on vacation and may or may not have shared them with some of his bros, so what? If I'm angry at him it's for not being more careful with public photography and how a single moment, no matter how legal, could ruin lives.

Update: Learned that someone reported my husband to our local sheriff. Not sure how I feel about that because there's absolutely NOTHING that can justify them coming to our door to question us.

Initially posted this on a legal help subreddit and it didn't gain any traction at all. I feel sick to my stomach. I live in a very small town that that I thought would be more sympathetic to these issues but it looks like there's a bunch of people who want their five minutes of feeling special.

We're in complete shock and I'm worried for our safety. Update: As I was writing this someone posted a google maps view of our home and address.

My husband was in a store when he was approached by an employee who said someone made a complaint that he was taking photographs of customers in the store. My husband told her that he was taking pictures of items in the store so that he can ask me if I wanted him to grab anything (I was working). The woman told him that it was against the store's policy to take pictures so he should delete the photos and stop. While they were talking a man, the woman's boyfriend came up to my husband and was extremely aggressive with him, calling him names including "pervert" and demanding that he deleted the photos from his phone in front of him. My husband said, "okay, okay, I will" completely bewildered at this moment, wanting to calm him down. At that moment, the boyfriend pulls out his own phone, takes a few steps back, and takes pictures of my husband's face and says, "I want you to delete them off your phone and off the deleted files folder too!!" After he says that, my husband who felt like this wasn't going to escalate in any good way if he stays, walks away, pays for his goods, and leaves. No employee came after him nor did the couple.

A few days later we find out that the girlfriend made a post about him on several Facebook bulletin boards, including one that's the town we live in including two very clear pictures of him in the store from the chest up. The post has been shared close to seven hundred times now. The statement said that this "creep" was stalking her and was following her on Facebook, that he "admitted it", and please share this post as many times as you can so people can be aware.

I noticed that a friend of a coworker commented on the Facebook post saying, "hey, I know this guy!" and goes on to write on the public post my husband's name, and the area that we live in. There is at least one person who has "liked" the post that has our full names and address and the friend of the friend knows the exact location where we live.

Several other people seem to have confused my husband with someone else we don't know. One man that we have no connection to said that he used to know my husband and that he had a head injury a few years back and it made him a completely different person, that "he used to be nice". A woman chimed in and said that it was the "guy who used to harassed my friend on her property at 3AM last year". And this morning when I got to work my bosses (who were completely understanding and my husband has also worked for them a few times in the past) told me that a woman they didn't know contacted their business page and told them to be aware of a dangerous guy who broke into her house last year and it was this man.

The comments are terrible and we're losing sleep over it - they're saying how my husband should be locked up, how he was probably stalking her and checking to see if he can kidnap her. Several employees from stores that we frequent in the area said that they recognize him and will keep an eye out. I'm freaking out because we live in a place where it might take the sheriff two hours to get to us if there's roadwork and we have very few neighbors. We are not armed and we do not have dogs. I have flagged the post on Facebook but it's still up.

What is our best course of action? My husband has ZERO social media presence and is technologically stunted (I'm pretty comfortable with tech, but nothing to write home about, I'm just good at figuring stuff out via google or I ask one of my best friends who's a computer technician). I have a Facebook page that I'm not very active on (has been VERY active in the past but I haven't used it much since my father passed away two years ago and he was so active on it that it's been too much of a painful reminder for me to interact with people that know both him and me) but I use it for hobby groups occasionally and I joined a few of the small town groups but I don't post in them.

My husband was NOT stalking this woman and her boyfriend. His record is clean save for a few traffic tickets in ten years. We've been together for over ten years, lived in two countries, worked many jobs. We've been through personal tragedies that we've both supported each other through. We completed an immigration process together. We have friends and employers and even exes that will vouch for his character. I'm so terrified that this is going to ruin our life and we do not have the option to just pick up and move. My husband was also getting ready to apply for work in the area since we finalized the closing of our home business end of last year. I was also hoping to start a stand in various local farmers market this summer and my husband would be helping me with that. This is ripping our hearts apart and to see my husband's name and character be dragged in the mud like that is killing me.

TLDR: A woman falsely claiming that my husband took pictures of her and was stalking her made a public Facebook post with photographs of my husband and shared it on various public community groups. Someone wrote his first name on the comment section and the general area of where we live and businesses that we frequent. Some people have confused him with other criminals in the area. We are terrified that this might have short-term ramifications for our safety and property and long term problems such as finding employment. Any help or any suggestion for a course of action would be appreciated.
