I’m in a similar boat right now with concerns myself. However my soon to be ex has left and abandoned my daughter and I twice and last time it was to a mental ward for self harm and other mental issues. She also has undocumented alcohol problems. So many people are telling me not to worried but I’m terrified.

in my state, the only way a man gets sole custody is if the mother is a homeless junkie.

it's like a cliche. you hear a guy say he has sole custody, and you ask "is your ex an addict?".

My wife met these weird people at her dojo, and started going out with them more and more. Eventually, she would disappear for days at a time, then show up in the middle of the night in strange clothes acting as if nothing was wrong and with no explanation for where she had been or what she had been doing, then tried to kill herself when I filed for divorce, broke out of the mental institute they stuck her in, kidnapped our son and lived in a cave for 3 days until they ran out of food, got the cops called on her trying to shoplift charcoal from a convenience store, which wound up in a foot chase through a state park where she stole a boat...

This goes on for a while.

My son's mom had bad post partum depression and left the family home without notice and with our son. The next morning, 8am, I was in my divorce attorneys office and he said I should file immediatly, ex-parte.

The next day she admitted to the court she couldn't care for our child but wanted me to hire a full time nanny. Then, she said, she wanted full custody.

I was granted temporary full custody on the spot as the competent parent.

Three years later, when the case was settled, my ex got better and we shared 50/50 custody. She never stopped fighting this though and we were in and out of court for 14 years at a cost of 300k.

The woman will have to be a monumental POS. You said it yourself. Otherwise, the courts will give her ad many chances as they want, so they get their TITLE IV D money.

I was fortunate that she "allwed" 50/50 custody exchanges before a custody order was in place. Custody orders just memorialize whatever the acting arrangement is regardless of whether the dad was forced into it or not. So I lucked out. If she had done what most mothers do then I would be SOL.

After that order was in place she wanted to move to her parents house but couldn't take my son with her because of the custody order. So she filed to get more money from me and then abandoned my son. I got full custody she got my money. No doubt in my mind that I got the better deal.

I know of a few that are friends of friends. 1) Multiple DUIs with the kids in the car. I think three over two years between alcohol and opioids. 2) Felony conviction with a 5ish year sentence. 3) Abandoned the family and moved across the country and refused to come to three or four court hearings in a row.
