It works, but only for women. A woman just has to be herself and focus on herself, lots of males will chase her. For a man ? You’ll have to do a lot more, including flirt, without any guarantees of the results

Too much text, but to answer your title question, yes it is bullshit. The only time being yourself works is if who you are is attractive. If who you are doesn't attract/seduce women, then being yourself won't work for you.

The better dating advice is to be the best/most attractive version of yourself you can be.

Yea it’s bullshit made up from girls and guys to make the guy feel better about himself. It’s not ok to be yourself. Be the Best version of yourself is the best message.

Nobody says just be yourself. It's just be your BEST self and don't desperately chase women for the sole purpose of sleeping with them like some creepy perv. Not complex my dudes.

I know it’s cliche but that’s why I think being “the best version of yourself” is important. Obviously if “yourself” is an overweight loser who smokes weed and plays video games all day, you obviously aren’t getting any women.

First there must be physical attraction. Luckily, women are quite tolerant, in this respect and gym + personal hygiene + tasteful clothing can improve things a lot. With regards to being "oneself", this is how I read it: pretending to be a different persona, in order to seduce, will be most likely exposed with a sh*t test and rejected. You have to be your attractive self. Are you a natural arrogant "bad boy" or some kind of James Bond on a secret mission? Good for you, you'll be successful with those women who like that type of man. It is also inevitable that you will likely repel the kind of woman who prefers the humorist or the intellectual; this is normal, albeit there are cases of strange couples that surprise everybody.

Few men are so emotionally intelligent that they can detect the favorite type of the target of seduction and then such good actors that they can morph themselves into that character, in order to fulfil the woman's fantasies.

This is exactly how Giacomo Casanova explains his success with women, in his memoirs.
