Under what conditions do you cancel a date?

When you change your mind about the girl.

Then there’s nothing but radio silence until the day of and you’re left wondering if she’s still down.

That's your first mistake. Why are you disappearing after setting up the date? Of course the girl will flake if you do that as she'll think you've lost interest in her.

Another dead giveaway is obviously the “maybe” or we’ll see, let me check my schedule” to which I just tell her to hit me up when she’s free.

Well duh, her answer needs to be affirmative, not ambiguous.

what kind of vibes indicate that she’s actually interested in meeting up as opposed to just saying “yes” to be nice, then flaking the day of?

She responds relatively quickly, keeps a conversation going, doesn't use one word answers kind of vibe. Another reason why it's important to continue talking to her after you've set up the date.

It's also key to send a text the morning of the date saying "hey, we still on for tonight?". If she doesn't respond affirmatively by 3pm, she's flaking on you.

Ah yes. Flake frustration!

My thoughts:

I tried to set dates 1 to 3 days in advance. Tomorrow, the day after, or the day after that. It's hard to get a date the same day, the more days out, the more likely they flake.
It's always awkward in the period after you've set the date but before you've been on it, but you obviously have to go through that period. I try to not go radio silent. If they don't respond, I'll try to send light texts just to let them know I'm still interested (I'm talking 1 text per day). They will probably send light texts back to confirm that they are still interested. A good idea for a light text is referencing something that you talked about in the conversation before you asked for the date.
On the day of, I do send a confirmation text in the morning. Usually it's "hey, still on for tonight?" You should get a resounding yes.
The younger the girl, the more difficult it is. I'm 34, and it's unlikely that a date with a girl under 25 will stick. If the girl is over 30 however, it always sticks. Even if it's more than a week out.
If she flakes, it obviously sucks, but don't overanalyze what you could have done better. Some of them are just going to flake. It's just the way the game goes.
