Bars are social spots where people drink, talk, eat, and sometimes play games (darts, pool, etc). The biggest reason people who are drunk hate people who don't drink is that they feel they are being judged for drinking. They combat this feeling by becoming defensive and try to pressure you into drinking or otherwise leave to feel more comfortable. The easy solution is to not judge people and show you are having a good time.

Never say things that make drinking seem bad or beneath you. Instead pivot the conversation towards some other topic. A quick solution is just say you are a designated driver or you simply don't enjoy the taste. The is easily relatable and usually gets people on to more interesting topics quickly like the craziest food they have eaten.

Yes. It complicates you. You're making a conscious choice to eschew an activity that the overwhelming majority of people enjoy. But you can choose to handle that in a manner that is not off-putting. It's on you to make other people comfortable with your choice to not drink.

You can just say you're driving. When you're truly confident you don't really care if others know if you're drinking or not and you probably wouldn't want to be with someone who does care.

Having said that, I understand what you mean about complicating things, sometimes you wonder if they or others will think you're trying to take advantage of them by being sober. In these situations I'll just say I'm drinking a bourbon and coke (I always drink coke at the bar), and if they want to have a sip I'll let them and say "this one tastes a bit weak, do you think they screwed me over with the amount of bourbon?" - great conversation starter too.

Finally, I really don't even like making out with girls who have been drinking because they get sloppy and they reek of alcohol, I almost vomited once when a girl was licking my face with her alcohol breath. So if you're anything like me you'll probably have a better time focusing on the more sober girls at the venue, or go on dates with girls who don't want to much too drink, you can have a better conversation this way too. Sometimes though the girls are shy and want to get a drink or two in them, so previous solution could work well here.

Maybe if you have nerves and a drink will ease you, but if you think you're smooth when you're drunk you are mistaken.

Mystery used to ask the bartender for a club soda with a few limes. When he would talk to women they would ask him what he got. They assumed it was special since it had more than one lime in it. It was a conversation piece if he needed it to be. I think he might have created a routine where he asked the girl to guess, or said it was too strong for her (giving her a challenge).

If you don't drink, just have a good reason for not drinking. Mystery once had a fake cigar as a prop. A woman asked "whats with the fake cigar?" At first he didn't know what to say and the woman walked away. The next time a woman came up to ask about his fake cigar, he said "I don't smoke real cigars because smoking is unhealthy." Just have a reason for your behavior, especially if its out of the ordinary, and you'll be ok.

In addition to the good advice in previous comments, you'll find that there's a not-insignificant minority of desirable, cool women who don't drink and are excited about meeting a nondrinker guy with his shit together. A lot of them had alcoholic parents or grandparents and are worried about the genetic component. The only bar you need to clear is to appear as neither too much of a nerd (ie you have no good reason for never having been a drinker other than social awkwardness), or too much of a recently recovered addict (whose ultimate sobriety and ability to handle yourself they might not trust).

I used to be a fairly heavy drinker. I don't think I had a physical addiction to alcohol, but all my friends drank a lot (entertainment business...) and I saw it as a social necessity to meet people. Ironically, trying to figure out my problems with women made me cut way back, to the point that I maybe drink 2 beers a month now instead of getting fucked up 3-4 nights a week. I realized that any social awkwardness which was smoothed over by my drinking was obliterated by the stupid bragging I did when drunk, the erection problems and resultant lack of confidence it caused, and the fact that I used it as a crutch instead of actually looking at my life in an objective way.
