I think why this strategy works is that it makes the girl lower her bitch shield concerning you, making her change her perception of you from "threat" to "maybe-he-s-a-cool-guy-afterall"... I must say, it must feel good discovering this by yourself in the field. :-)

In my country (we're like mini-russia) the guy would probably freak out and both would assume that you're gay and that you're assuming the guy is gay as well. He would probably be insecure about it and to prove his manliness he might even take you outside and beat the shit out of you for making him feel like a "faggot". (I'm not kidding). But nevermind that, it would be a total turn-off for a girl that you need such amount of approval to even talk to her, even if you somehow explain that you're not gay and not get your ass kicked.
If you're actually going to do this (for some weird reason) buy both of them a drink. Or for a whole company at the table. (we actually do that very often, send each other rounds for the total strangers at the tables next to us. Serbian kafana is a place where you enter knowing no one - and exit having 3 new godfathers and 4 new brothers)

But even better thing, you don't really have to buy anyone a drink, certanly not HIM, all you have to do is to acknowledge that guy exists show him some basic friendly respect and move on to a girl. It's that simple.

Be direct, you know that you want the girl, she knows that, there's nothing be ashamed of that, don't pretend and go all around her like she's the ending prize after you beat all levels and final bosses...

Just go talk to her like a man in his prime who knows what he wants.

You ALWAYS make friends with the guys that your girl is around. Get their approval and she will take key with it and approve with them. This works great when opening up a large set, the girl isn't the target, us men defend against the intruder. when the men of the group allow you in is a good time to start talking to her. hell, if you are suave enough you could ask them if they mind you taking her away from them, of course have her hand in your hand as you're doing it and do it anyways. Bam, chick is now isolated with the approval of the guys that she came in with.

For those wondering why this would work, consider you're the friend the girl is with. Some guy comes in, starts buying everyone drinks and shooting it up with everyone, he's sort of breaking his way into the circle and taking control.
