They ignore you because it's not "normal" to make eye contact and on the streets most people don't have the confidence to make eye contact or feel it's awkward to make eye contact.

When someone looks away it's just a sign of lack of confidence on their part and has nothing to do with you. Actually you probably used to do the same thing all the time regardless of who was making eye contact with you. Were you "rejecting" those people or were you just not comfortable with making or maintaining eye contact on the street?

Feeling like you get rejected when people don't make eye contact is just silly.

I like doing that, too. Those people who don't look back, won't remember you anyway. Those who do (especially all those lovely girls/women), often cannot resist smiling back.

Isn't it kinda a part of that far-Eastern culture to 'keep to yourself'? I'm not sure, but if it is, then it's not like it's your fault they're not looking at you.

Also, even if they were rejecting you, who cares? They don't know you or what you're about. Stay positive and confident.

Never been to HK, so I cannot speak on the specifics of there.

However, you would be surprised at the number/percentage or people that flat-out do not pay attention to their surroundings. People walk straight forward, eyes straight forward, not looking around, etc.. People just don't pay attention, or they are attentive to the wrong thing (mobile technology).

Just consider this, last time you were in a car, would you have known if a car was tailing (not tail-gating) you for 2 minutes or 20 minutes?

It's exactly the same in the UK. I might need to smile a bit more, but I'm not sure anyone would notice.

Try smiling with your face when you are on the streets. You will seem a lot nicer and people won't be afraid of you.

Note: Only smile with your mouth after you already made some kind of (eye) contact as it could seem creepy when you randomly smile at people.

Who cares if people make eye contact with you or not? It's more for you than others. I'm guessing the primary objective of this practice is for you to become comfortable and make a habit of looking people in the eye when you approach.

Unless you're trying to day game, don't give a shit about if people look at you or not.

It's considered rude to look a stranger in the eye over there, it's considered to be staring them down

That's what I head about it from a seminar about international business, they say in a business meeting you can make eye contact but don't try and hold it

Also, what do you expect? If you're walking down the street amid thousands of other people and have somewhere you need to be, you're not going to stop for everyone who may look like they're looking at you. They could be looking at one of the hundreds of people and things around you, it's fucking Hong Kong

I was doing this In Japan and I got some pretty good responses. Like others have said, looking away isn't rejection, it's their lack of confidence. Many girls will look away smiling, and then say something to their friend as I pass ( it's cute how they assume I don't understand them).

One thing I noticed was that on the streets, about half of the girls would notice me, but in malls and other places with lots of external stimulus, it fell to about 20%.
