Why are strangers such a force of anxiety?

Fear of being judged. Even if you say you have no expectations or don’t care about the outcome, you care about your ego. You have your own self image. You’re afraid of that random stranger seeing you in a different way.

In your mind, you see yourself giving that compliment and the person going “oh wow, thanks so much. You made my day. You’re kind cute too 😘”

In reality, they might say “wtf get away from me creep”. The trick is to build up that self confidence so that those remarks don’t destroy your sandcastle

Giving someone a compliment to brighten their day is great in concept. I believe a lot of people have anxiety about doing this because they never know what somebody is going to take as a compliment or take offensive to.

In real life it's difficult to cold approach a woman out there in the wild and not embarrass yourself. If you have a handle, it's totally different. Say, you are in the dance class and you like this woman. You go to her and say something like e.g. "wow, you really do this step very well ... I don't seem to manage, can you show me?" (just as an example). Then you raise your antennas to capture her vibe: does she smile and is she happy to interact or is she uncomfortable and visibly cold / suspicious? Basic social skill.

Because you are wired that way. For millenia meeting strangers more often than not would mean a fight with possible outcome of injury or death.

Here is a tip. But a cheap wedding band, put it on your finger and for one day forget that you are a sad loser who has a bigger Swedish porn collection than Kim Jong Un. Pretend that you are a happily married man who has no need for other women, but at the same time you are a sexual being who likes women and wants to brighten their day.

With that frame of mind walk up to any girl you fancy and say: "Hey, I'm Bob. You look absolutely gorgeous/beautiful/cute." When they say thank you, etc., reply: "Look I'm married (point to your wedding band), but I have this philosophy that a woman should be complimented at least once every day, so that's my way of putting a smile on your face. Nice talking with you, bye!".

And get out. Again, pretend that you had no interest in picking her up in the first place, just giving a compliment as a secure married guy who is already getting what he needs.

I have found if you just say something, anything. The stranger often will be friendly or a relay or good facial reaction. I start or comment to people I don't know all the time, old, young, you name it. 90% it makes their day better based on the reaction, 10% it doesn't matter what you do, they are grumpy.
