Canned lines are like used-car salesmen openings and their high-pressure sales techniques - you can smell them a mile way from their stink and staleness. Just to be clear - they can work - the profession of used-car sales still exists because they do work; however, that's not the only way to do it. I personally think it's dangerous to rely on them too much because they can become bad habits or crutches.

Better to simply be more observant of your environment and of other people to use those for openings. On train? There are a million things happening. Everyone is going somewhere which offers a million openings, for example.

I'm against canned openers, but usually conversations start by commenting on how public transport sucks or it is always late. Then explain a very short story on how you arrived late for an exam/job interview and let the girl talk.

I have much experience in this, as the Spanish public transport is always late... I've been "opened" many times by bored girls who just wanted conversation.

Use situational openers. Canned openers are BS.

hmm not really canned... but this is more situational... but you can do this:
You: Do you remember when you were a kid and you had this long car trip?
Her: Whatever her response
You: Well I remember I use to read funny joke books, etc. and my favorite one was...
Her: Laughs
You: So tell me your favorite

or
You could open up with a game a pen and paper game... tic-tac toe, hangman, etc. especially great if there's condensation on the window... mention you're challenging her... ask her if is she up to the challenge. Then you can go on with rock, paper, scissors, flirt, etc...

The reason I would go for this is because you're bringing fun in a rather monotonous ride. You're trying to bring her back to good childhood memories. You're being different.
tl;dr: open with childhood memory of games/jokes.

I just want add in that the most common situations during public transport are the following: girl doing nothing (which I answered above) so here's the rest...

You need to do eye contact first before you could do this but the variation would be:
Reading a book:
You: What are you reading?
Her: Whatever
You: I currently read ____, you know when I was kid I used to read... during trips. What was yours?
Her: Whatever
You: That really sounds interesting tell me more about it...

** Reading a newspaper:**
You: What are you reading?
Her: Whatever
You: It seems newspapers are filled with gloomy things these, let's play a game... I challenge you to find at least two funny or good articles. I will do the same...

** Headphones:**
You definitely need to initiate eye contact on this one...
After eye contact, motion as if you have earphones on and removing it off... she will remove hers.
You: Hey, so what are you listening?
Her: Whatever
You: Is this what you listen during long trips?
Her: Whatever
You: Imagine that you're a kid again, what was that song that you just sang again and again to the point that parents got annoyed....

See where I'm going on this one?
If the energy between you are and her are pretty good, you could ask if you were a tourist in our city, what's the best place or your favorite place to eat... Then offer yours... then offer her.

The standard.. "escuse me, I don't mean to bother you miss, but I noticed you sitting here, and I just felt like talking to you for a minute..."

It's not a bad idea to false time constraint
Somewhere in the beginning you can throw in... "I'm enjoying this conversation with you, to be honest I'm quite shy and don't usually talk to strange girls, but I don't know, I spent 4 hours straring at spreadsheets today (or whatever it is you do), so a little bit of human contact is good for the ride home.... plus it doesn't hurt when the person is kinda cute..."
When the conversation has run its course, eject and change seats by saying you'll get to whatever it was she was doing before, and close accordingly. Don't wait until before you or her is about to get off
