Being a leader (a 'king' as it were) is a more thankless and tiring job than people give it credit for, but just like a good company needs good management, social settings need a leader. Chances are your most popular friend is the one that's always corralling people to go out on the town or to some fun activity, and acts hurt if you don't come. He's always introducing new people to each other, and several of your friends probably owe their relationships to him

This is absolutely correct. I've told this story in seddit, but it's relevant here again.

Through middle school and high school, I was largely an AFC -- I got plenty of action, but it was on the sly, with nerdy girls that hung in my circles, and I certainly wasn't F-closing on any cheerleaders after the big game.

In 1992, my parents dropped me off at college, where I knew no one. And therefore, no one knew me. I had this realization as I stood at the top of the stairs and watched my family drive off. So, I thought, if no one knows me, why not just be whoever or whatever I want to be? And, bam, I was. I was alpha. It helped that I went to an engineering school, since there were far nerdier types than me -- but nonetheless, I simply made the decision to be alpha and was.

My dad used to say, "A title is something they put on your door. A title doesn't make you powerful and important. How you act makes you powerful and important."

So make that choice. Decide that you want to be alpha. And then live alpha. The last thing we need in this world are more followers.

You make an interesting point and I agree with most of what you have said. The only thing though is that I happen to be one of those people who find it "dumb, or stupid" to want to control the social situation: I am not interested in playing that game. I neither want my nose stuck up the top dog's ass, nor do I want to have anyone else's nose up mine! Being king is about being true to yourself, and not obsessing over what people think of you (without being an asshole as you said). You might have less "friends" for it, but those who appreciate you will treat you with respect and fondness which I think is considerably more gratifying than people simply thinking you're "cool". This said, that's the kind of person I am. I completely understand and respect people who want to play the social game, as there is much to win from it too.
