I have been on vacation for the last week in New Mexico with my parents and their friends. One of my dad's roommates from college owns a house in the mountains and from there we hiked, kayaked, rode horses, drank, and drank some more. Being with my parents for a week I had no real intention of trying to seduce women but the opportunity presented itself and I thought, what the hell.

On the fifth day of the vacation my mother and the other women spend a day shopping while the men decide to go on a hike up to a lake in the mountains. We are prepping our gear at the trail head when I notice a family arrive with hiking gear as well. The daughter appears to be my age and is extremely attractive, very fit with great, tone legs. I look at my dad and his old roommates, we all acknowledge subliminally what we have just seen. One of my dad's roommates gives me the nod in her direction with a thumbs up. I laugh to dispense some anxiety. How in the hell am I suppose to do anything with her family right there?

Being the youngest with the best hiking gear (I went on a 6 week camping trip last year) the guys decide my pack should have nothing but beer in it, and I should pack it myself. The girl notices this and I hear her laugh. I realize this is my opportunity and I need to act now or never. I stand up from stuffing my pack full of aluminum cans and ask her if she would like to carry some. She is amused and tells me thanks but no thanks. She then asks me why I am packing so many and damn, that must be heavy. I give a slight chuckle and explain I am hiking with my dad and his roommates from college. Being more then half their age and in much better shape I am Sherpa and pack mule. She then tells me how terrible it has been being stuck with her mom, dad, and little sister for the last five days.

My troupe of "middle aged excessive drunks when on vacation" leave not to soon after our quick conversation. When it appears we are out of earshot from the family the guys all give me a pat on the back and tell me if I need help to finish the deal they are here for me. Okay, sure...

We reach the lake, start eating lunch, and crack open the first round of cold ones. About a hour later the family emerges and sets up for lunch about fifty feet from us. I soon realize the eyes of my dad and all his buddies are on me, waiting with anticipation. I isolate myself from the group and carry my DSLR to snap some lake photos about 20 feet from the family. The girl comes over and I show her my camera, unfortunately I do not have my large telephoto lens with me. We talk about college and I tell her I am a geology major, she is finance. She asks me about the geology and I tell her the rocks are all metamorphosed. I explain the process behind metamorphic rocks and she seems genuinely interested. She points across the lake to an interesting rock outcrop that has been visibly deformed, I suggest we walk over there and look at it.

After walking around the lake and explaining what an anticline and syncline is we head back. During our walk we discover that we live 3 hours from each other, her in Dallas, me in Austin. I should have asked for her number here, before we arrived back with our respective groups, but I did not. When we get back my dad and his buddies our sharing beers with her dad and they are laughing. Woah, I was not expecting this. The girl's dad tells me he should have had a son to carry beers for him, haha everyone laughs. He then asks me about the geology. I infer some more and bullshit the rest, but damn do I sound smart.

Her dad starts talking with my dad and his buddies. We go sit by the lake. I make sure to trade digits now and she lets me know that I have made today much more enjoyable for her. We talk a little bit more and then my group leaves first to hike back down. After walking for a little while, and hopefully out of earshot, my dad and his buddies give me a round of applause; I show them the girl's number. They do not believe me so I tell them when we get cell phone service I will text, "had fun hiking today, if you need/want to learn anymore geology give me a call."

After getting back to the house I send the text while we all sit on the deck drinking Maker's. Ten, twenty, thirty minutes go by and nothing. We are buzzing and I am being given a hard time, accused of making up the number. One of the guys calls texting bullshit and the rest of the old men holler in agreement. Right around the forty minute mark my phone lights up. It is her. "Oh yeah! Thanks again for making today more fun I didn't think rocks could be interesting :) I visit Austin on occasion we should meet up. Are there any metamorphosed rocks we can find ;)" As I read off the message the guy naysaying texting grabs my phone and mutters, "no shit." My dad smiles.
