Dear Seddit,
Thank you for exisiting. Seddit's advice has helped me build self-respect and adjust my internal compass to a heatlhy bearing. I don't find myself agreeing with or liking everything I see in Seddit, but I'm not so naive and proud that I can't see the value inherent in Seddit's methodology to living a full life as my best possible self.
I don't read seddit because I want to get laid or because I need a girlfriend. Both of those are true, but my goal is to feel strong and confident in a variety of situations--especially when gender dynamics come into play. I'm confident that if I can master the goal of strength and confidence, sex and a girlfriend will follow. If I have to work at it for ten years to reach success then it takes ten years. As long as the strength and confidence is genuine and the foundation beneath my feet is solid I do not care how long it takes me to gain that strength and confidence.
I am not a born leader, nor am I the kind-of man who inspires or commands attention and respect from others without great effort. I am a 5'7" 200 lb. young man with boyish features, a plain wardrobe, a lack of social maturity, and a predisposition to intellectualize--particularly analysis, synthesis, and integration. I am 23 and due to a rudderless childhood and tumultuous late adolescence punctuated by unnecessarily extreme mental illness and drug abuse, I am still working towards my Associate's Degree with the long-term prospect of a Master's in a Math/Science related field.
Both physically and socioeconomically I am not an intimidating figure, nor someone others wish to rally behind. Nor will I likely ever be a truly wealthy or powerful man. In fact I usually have to fight to acquire basic human respect. Moreover my best and most developed attributes tell me that I would not make a competent leader, nor do I desire to be "Alpha". I have nothing against being a leader or being an “Alpha”, and will take the role when circumstances require me to—but will gladly cede to a more qualified male as even on my very best day I have never truly been a King amongst men.
I am comfortable enough with myself to accept and love these qualities. I respect myself enough to eat well and work out and improve--I've lost 20 lbs. in the past month and begun a consistent and steadily improving workout regiment. I am not so young that I haven't taken the time to evaluate my wardrobe, or form my life's priorities. I am exactly where I need to be in life, and while I do not seek fortune or high prestige to be happy I am confident that with judicious effort and some luck I will be able to live a fulfilling life with a salary I can live on and start a family with in addition to becoming stronger, more well-traveled, more well-read, and more mature every day from today until I am dead.
That said, I feel I am boring. I have begun to diversify my hobbies with an eye towards building a skill set, giving back to the community, and meeting new people, but it has been a few first steps and I have not committed nor have I seen the fruits of labor.
Conversationally I oscillate between dry satisfaction which I have seen can be arrogant and condescending, and an eagerness for intimacy and construction which can be childish and insecure. There is a great disconnect between what I know and what I feel, and neither extreme lends itself well to bonding. I am also frank, am not prone to lying nor exaggeration, and am not a "fun" guy who plays games outside of structured game environments.
I feel these qualities make me less attractive to young women--especially those between ages 18-25 who primarily seem to be looking for "fun, exciting, and a little mysterious" in their men first and foremost.
My current personality/resume makes me a "Baxter"--the man a woman sees as the last piece of ass after her young and care-free days; the man she marries because Daddy is more likely to approve; the man she "settles" for because that dashing rogue could never limit himself to just her.
While I love who I am and improve each day, the fact that I do not have any desire to exaggerate or embellish who I am to attract someone has left me feeling insecure.
Thus I come to Seddit with the following questions:
Do men who don't exhibit traditional or flashy qualities of leadership, but are quite and humble about themselves garner respect from you or other men? Bear in mind I am under average height, have boyish features, and am a lot of hard work away from being muscular or buff.
How do I--a man who wishes to take no more control than that which is necessary for his desires and obligations--deal with another man attempting to use me as an object of control or even ridicule and shame? Both physically, verbally, mentally, and emotionally?
Does someone who has a large disconnect between their emotional mind and intellectual mind strike you as haughty and arrogant? Vulnerable and exploitable?
What are strategies to say "cool under pressure" and respond with poise and articulation quickly? I possess a modicum of writing ability, but lack rapid wit or great elocution in my speech.
A variation on above--How does one function in a social situation after being humiliated without becoming a clown to others?
Once I have built my own life to the point of attraction, how do I retain a woman's affections when other "flashier" men attempt to distract and woo her with shows of excitement and wonder beyond my humble vision of what is exciting and wondrous?
How does a man interact with others in a field he is wholly ignorant in without looking like a rube or overcompensating with knowledge from his spheres of interest?
How does one respond to implications of worthlessness by those who may be accomplished and respected in their own profession but are speaking out of turn (i.e: The classic of the Lawyer proclaiming "those who can't do, teach" loudly to a High School Teacher at a party)?
Is it possible for a man who has no interest in being a leader or jockeying for an "Alpha" appearance to be attractive and seductive to a high-value young woman with many suitors?
How does one talk to those--men and women alike--who are polite and genial and even good friends, but betray a haughty attitude and lack of respect towards me without merely puffing out my chest and holding onto my pride?
I don't expect easy or simple answers for any of these questions. However they are all insecurities and genuine problems I have encountered during regular social interaction in the last year, and if there is any community that I think could help me it would be Seddit.
Thank you very much for your time. I hope to speak with members of the community in more depth soon.
