Yeah, if you tell them you have a "high status job" like lawyer (heavy emphasis on ironic quotes for putting "high status" and lawyer in the same sentence) then it sounds like you're trying to qualify yourself to her. If you qualify to her, she gains the frame and you lose.
There are some pretty developed routines about this. You work at Taco Bell. You drive a garbage truck. You're an ass model. A pornographer. I've used these routines and they work (but then, I'm a writer, in other words, mostly unemployed).
But it's not so bad when your buddy says you're a lawyer, a wingman can get away with directly building you up, things that would not work if you said them. So he can say you're a lawyer, but you say, "no, I work at Taco Bell."
Or if you think your friends have read Hunter S Thompson (a long shot) you can use his classic lines from Fear and Loathing:
"As your attorney, I advise you to start drinking heavily." "As your attorney, I advise you to tell me where you put the goddam mescaline." "As your attorney, I advise you to slow down, I can't keep up, man!"

Hmm, I see what you're saying, but could you help me understand how I can avoid the appearance of qualifying to a woman in this situation, please?
I'm going to law school in a downtown area, but live off campus of my undergrad school (a different institution and not downtown). Nearly everybody living here goes to the school, so, questions like, "what year are you?" and "what's your major?" will inevitably come up from people I meet.
How can I answer this most effectively without sounding qualifying, pretentious, like an ass, or however else it might be perceived?

Well that would be a first. Every law student I ever met was a pretentious ass. Nothing personal, but you know plenty of guys like that I'm sure. LOL.
We generally try to avoid what we call "job interviews" like what do you do, where do you live, etc. But if you're routinely running into fellow students, I suppose it's inevitable and you could seem evasive if you don't answer or use too many disqualifiers like "I work at Taco Bell."
I'm not in your position so I've never really considered what to do in your spot. But I would guess you might try the strategy of getting them to jump through your hoop before you jump through theirs. So if they ask what your major is, maybe you could reflect it back and ask them what their major is first, before you answer their question. That doesn't sound like an optimal strategy.
Maybe a good strategy would be to craft a DHV out of a "persona." You aren't a law student, you're studying law so you can work in environmental protection, or something like that. DHVs often hit "attraction switches" like Leader of Men, so maybe you're Government Guy, you want to fight for the common man so you're studying government law. Whatever your situation is, you can craft some DHV that is more indirect than bluntly saying you're a law student or lawyer. It has to be subtle so it doesn't sound like you're bragging.
Hmm.. I was thinking, maybe there are more strategies in the "jump through your hoop first" area. The way to get out of her trying to make you qualify yourself to her, is to pre-empt her and get her to qualify to you. So maybe you run a classic "bait hook reel release" routine and only reveal what you do after she qualifies to you. "Oh, you're a senior? I can't believe it, I'm a senior too." Or even take it totally off school subjects to get her to qualify.
Well I'm coming up pretty dry on ideas. None of those seem ideal, or even very workable. But study some pua materials and you will probably see relevant topics under "frame control" or qualification.

Okay, thank you so much for the detailed response. It's exactly what I was looking for. I like your idea of specifying a goal for going to law school, and I was thinking that it also might be a good idea to just gloss over it anyway.
Thanks again, I really appreciate it.

I find that it helps if you add a hoop for her to jump through first. Make her guess your occupation (or age or nationality) before telling her.

Might be talking out of my ass, but I have run into a similar situation because I work at a silicone manufacturer. Girls who react negatively always say "Oh so you make fake boobs.." and roll their eyes. Anyway the way I counter that is by brushing it off and explaining that we do more than most people think and that boobs are only one of many products.
Basically I try to minimize the negative image they have in their head by replacing it with something good

"Oh so you make fake boobs.."
That is funny. You should tell them you might consider giving them a discount if they are nice to you.

I sleep with these women so I guess I'm ok with that.

"Yeah I do that. I could probably get you a discount."

It could be those negative reactions, or those reactions could be the girls loving all the possible money you have. Might as well play to your strengths, right?

Own. That. Shit.
