The easy answer is to tell to "not give a fuck". Unfortunately it is not that easy. First read what PlutonianGlimpse said but please take it lightheartedly and only realize that everyone is on the same boat you are. Two start "not giving a fuck" by "giving a fuck" about yourself. Get your own priorities straight. Pick up a hobby. Always find new ways to challenge yourself. The more you sit around and think the more you become frustrated at yourself for your own failings or frustration from others because of their lack of understanding. Start cooking, learn to change oil in your car, hell....try doing something you always wanted to do....no matter how awkward it may seem. Often the most rewarding experiences come from opportunities I think I will hate......It almost always turns out to be better than expected. Key thing is to learn to become independent on your own by building up individual experiences and realizing what those experiences mean to you.

If you already feel like you are independent.....please kindly remind yourself of how you built yourself up to being independent. Your own unique lifestyle makes you into who you are. Build up confidence by reinforcing yourself by your achievements. Once you realize all your accomplishments, you hopefully get to a point where your comfortable with who are as a human being. If you feel that you have not accomplished enough....make a fucking list.

Work on that list and like I mentioned earlier always look for new ways to challenge yourself. Learn to appreciate what you have and make the most of it. People act petty and selfish because that is how most people are. Differentiate yourself from others by exposing yourself to different experiences and even lifestyles. Incorporate whatever you feel fits you from those experiences.

If I sounded a little crass.....please excuse me I am a little high right now.

tldr: become self aware, I highly recommend meditation. Go out and throw yourself out there. Two favorite quotes of mine: "get busy livin or get busy dyin" and "You got to keep breathing because the sun will rise and you will never know what the tide will bring".

First of all, saying "not giving a fuck" sounds so vague and it cannot be applicable to practical everyday life. By "not giving a fuck" you are actually getting rid of your concepts of self-worth. "Feeling Good" by Dr. David Burns helped me with this concept. Check out this passage:

...you must acknowledge that human "worth" is just an abstraction; it doesn't exist. Hence, there is actually no such thing as human worth. Therefore, you cannot have to have it or to fail to have it, and it cannot be measured. Worth is not a "thing," it is just a global concept. It is so generalized that it has no concrete or practical meaning. Nor is it a useful and enhancing concept. It is simply self-defeating. It doesn't do you any good. It only causes suffering and misery.So rid yourself immediately of any claim to being "worthy," and you'll never have to measure up again or fear being "worthless."

I'm in same boat. My panic of what others perceive me as cripples me and has for years. I'm only 22, this is not the way life should be at the very least at this stage of life. My fear is the not giving a fuck because of what could ensue from that decision. I truly do question at what point my body shuts down and just succumbs to the good, the not giving of fuck, the grab a girl and make out with her sort of thing. Because I have suffered for a looong time to have to keep dealing with this shit

The guy at StopGivingAFuck had little PDF booklet that I read at some point and thought was very good (very badly written tho). Can't find any references to it at the moment tho.

Furthermore, I've come to the conclusion that how much I give a fuck is inversely proportional to my self esteem. Ideas, such as those presented by PlutonianGlimpse will help you take the first steps, field experience will take it from there. But one book that I saw recently recommended on Brad Branson's (RSD) blog was The Six Pillars Of Self Esteem, which I now plan to read. Don't know much about it, but check it out. It might help.

The thing inside you that is 'giving a fuck' is actually fear. Fear is keeping you from doing the things that you want to do. The only way to conquer fear is to face it, like a boss. Practice, practice, practice. Think of it like a video game. Every time to talk to someone, your social skill goes up by 5 points, whenever it gets to 100, you go up a level in social.

I don't know if you've played the Elder Scrolls games or even the Sims, but our social skills go up the same way they do in those games. Any psychologist will tell you the same.
