Love the idea of it as an opener.

Somewhat related: I like to give girls IOIs on things about them that stand out, but recently I've been noticing that if I feel the urge to give her a verbal IOI, I really should just be escalating , especially nonverbally instead.

I noticed that sometimes i feel like saying "You're awesome!" to the girl. But after thinking about this, I realized it often was a way to try gauge her interest, aka, How does she respond to my IOI. This is quite the opposite of "assume attraction". Don't give IOI's as a way to gauge her interest, if you realize you want to, then just escalate.

Notice: this type of IOI giving is different than actually being super honest and genuine about something about herself that blows you away.

Something somewhat unrelated; is this a common thing to say in the US? I was at a boat party and was just feeling amazing. Talking to everyone, guys and girls, having a good time with friends and drinking. Then at some point this girl said "I like your style", which was a nice compliment, as I had never heard that before (I'm Dutch).

I can say I've had much more success opening with something like this as opposed to something like "Hey you're cute". But that's just me, I know a thing or two about fashion and girl's seem to appreciate a guy who knows how to dress.
