Don't get me wrong. You have to be you. You can only be you. If you are a guy who loves motorcycle racing and good beers, you shouldn't change that for anyone (except you, if you want to).

But, most of the time, that's not what I see.

What I usually see is guys using "just be yourself" as a cop-out so that they don't have to deal with anything uncomfortable, or putting up any kind of effort.

It becomes their excuse not to make positive changes in their life.

This comes out most fiercely when I tell guys to get back in shape. The benefits are clear and cannot be argued in any way.

This is what they'll say: "But being physically active isn't who I am - I don't like that stuff so why should I do it?"

Less often, but even worse, some people use it as an excuse to be a dickhole to as many people as possible. Anyone ever been a straight up ass-hat to you, and come up with "that's just who I am" as an excuse when you call them out on it?

Yeah, don't be that guy.

TL;DR "Just be yourself" is good advice when you use it as a guide to improve yourself and get what you want out of life. The same advice is terrible when it's used as an excuse to sit back and let things stay the way they are because "that's who you are."
