Does a list of openers/conversation threads exist? I understand you are not to memorize but having a cache of lines to fall back on to keep a convo going could be quite useful.

Google "conversation threading". It's a great way to take an element of whatever someone just said and branch off of it into a new topic.

I would say literally anything, as long as you can say it with enough congruency and confidence you're good. The most basic are just standard funny observations about the situation/setting around you.
